This new prototype from Intel has 48 separate processing cores and 1.3 billion transistors and it is the size of a postage stamp. There are effectively 24 dual-core processors on this chip and in theory each separate core could run an operating system. It has been called the Single-chip Cloud Computer and it is based on Intel’s X86 architecture which allows it to run Windows or Linux operating systems.
The chip also has an efficient power system which means it can be divided into areas and different voltages can be supplied according to the need. It is set to be officially available early in 2010 and I’d guess it will be pricey. Microsoft has already put it into their development plans. Intel is already set to clash with AMD as both companies launch 6 core devices in 2010, clearly this race could escalate quite a bit more in the coming years.
