With an improvement of 50% on the same quarter last year profits are confounding the critics and looking extremely healthy. They just made a profit of $3.37 billion in the last quarter. This is largely down to the and with sales apparently dropping off. is now a $50 billion company and they’re set to announce a new product on Wednesday. Speculation suggests we can expect a tablet computer with all sorts of functionality but we’ll have to wait and see.

It seems the months leading up to Christmas were the best ever for and their products, especially the are proving highly desirable. Perhaps more surprisingly sales have been rocketing as well with many first time buyers entering the market. Thanks to clever design and quality products have gone from strength to strength and managed to continue to sell their products at a premium based on that design even although you can often find cheaper alternatives with greater functionality.

A name long synonymous with cameras and photography, may have struggled in recent years with the move to digital. On Friday it was announced that they would be suing and Research in Motion because they allege that the and Blackberry use technology to preview pictures which is a direct infringement on patents. A spokesperson said they had been discussing the issue with the two companies for years now but could not come to an amicable solution and so they have asked the ITC to ban both companies from shipping phones until the damages are settled.

already won cases like this against Samsung and Sun Microsystems and they are engaged in a dispute with Nokia. and Nokia have also been having their own running dispute each claiming the other has infringed their patents. These cases are potentially worth millions but they are generally settled out of court.

You may not have heard of .com because they’ve been snapped up by not long after starting up. The company was threatening to break the dominance of the MP3 market with a new piece of software which allows you to stream songs instead of having to download them. Users are able to buy the right to stream songs on their iPhones from a digital locker for a limited period for only 10 cents per song. It offers 8 million tracks in total whereas iTunes offers 11 million. It is thought that iTunes account for around 70% of all online digital music sales.

The quality is definitely lower than the tracks being sold on ’s iTunes but they play within seconds and are being offered at a much cheaper price. bought the company, who originally launched in 2006, for an undisclosed fee. An spokesman said “ buys smaller technology companies from time to time and we generally do not comment on our purpose or plans,” It could be that a new streaming service will be added to iTunes in due course.

Apple Denies Rejecting Google Voice App

There is a federal inquiry into ’s decision not to approve for use on the or for sale through their App Store. It is a VoIP application which would allow voice calls to be routed over the internet. This technology works on phones using Google’s Android OS and Symbian but have pulled applications which use it. and AT&T admitted striking a deal to prevent apps using their for VoIP. This is obviously an attempt to protect profits because voice calls over the internet are cheaper.

have now backtracked and said the application is not rejected but still “under review”. The thing is apps like Skype have already been approved and ’s assertion that the app could “alter the ’s distinctive user experience” sounds very woolly indeed. The difference is that Skype uses Wi-Fi whereas the Google app connects to the internet via the AT&T 3G . AT&T denied having a hand in the decision. The argument continues.

Room Service via iPhone / iPod Touch at Malibu Beach Inn

Posted Monday, October 20th, 2008 by Alex Ion

Ordering room service using an or an Touch is one the most interesting things I’ve heard regarding ’s products. Apparently is trying to attract people that are in love with their touchscreens and won’t let go of the fancy brick, no matter what.

The hotel has a web application built for the Safari Browser, that allows all / Touch users to access remote capabilities like room service, setting a wake up call, requesting luggage, renting a limo and flipping the door placard to “Do Not Disturb”. Does that mean that geeks are lazy or is it just a nice way of saying we love you freaks, come stay at our hotel for a couple of nighs to play with the system. Not sure if any geek will afford something like the though.

New 24-inch LED Cinema Display from Apple

Posted Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 by Alex Ion

During the event today, not only the new aluminum MacBook Pro got people’s attention. A new 24-inch Cinema has been announced, too. The new does 1920×1200 pixels with 16.7 million colors, has a metallic edge and a glass-fronted glossy screen that makes it look similar with the current line of iMacs. Which if you ask me, it’s a great thing.

The new 24-inch Cinema from is going to feature an iSight camera, built-in microphone with built-in stereo speakers, backlighting and has USB connectivity (3port USB 2.0 hub). It’s  mercury-free and meets the latest ENERGY STAR requirements, which somehow … makes it eco-friendly. Wait for it in November for $899, if you like it. – via Electronista

What about the disappointening iPhone 3G?

Posted Monday, September 8th, 2008 by TechGeek

3G has gained the buzz that was looking for. Every press release or online article praised its qualities, features and price. Regarding myself, I had been a big fan before the launched, but I must tell you I changed my opinion as I used it. The same negative opinions have appeared recently regarding the latest version, the 3G.

People complain about its slow data speeds, weak signal or lack of enterprise features. That doesn’t sound good for ’s business, but it seems the praises were left out. Most of the users showed disappointment in ’s data connections. The blame cannot be put only on ’s weakness, but also to carriers. For example the data speeds vary from to – T- of Germany has the highest rates, while a carrier in Australia provides the lowest speeds.

Another issue pointed out by 3G users is the call dropping problem. It appears to be an intern problem, as the 2.02 firmware update has solved it. In addition, the users that didn’t experienced such a problem have encountered another – the weak signal inside buildings. That trouble was allegedly caused by a faulty chip set supplied by chipmaker Infineon Technologie.

The bad experiences continue with outages in MobileMe service and iTunes incompatibility. In the same list users included the third party applications sold over AppStore that created glitches and dissatisfaction.

An overall opinion makes you think twice before purchasing an . From the most precious of our time it has fallen in disgrace.
