The long way to choosing the name Windows Server 2008
Posted May 21st, 2007 by Alex Ion
Until last week we all knew that the new Windows Server release will be codename Longhorn but it looks like Microsoft is not doing what they said. The name is not going to be the one we thought before getting out of the 3rd beta stage. Bill Gates said at the Microsoft’s Windows Hardware Engineering Conference 2007 in Los Angeles that the name is straightforward : Windows Server 2008. Nice huh?
I don’t mind the name as long as the product does what it should. Working smoothly and without any errors is much more important than the name. Though Microsoft was thought to be the conservative company it looks like they had fun when choosing the final name. The video below shows that the road to the final name was not an easy one. From Windows Server Server Edition to America’s Next Top Server, then to Windows NT and Microsoft Server Operating System with Graphical User Interface from Home, Small Businesses and Enterprise Use in Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Computing Environments to the final Windows Server 2008. Though I know this is not the original way of conducting business at Microsoft it was fun to see it. Maybe Bill changed a little? – ALEX ION
