The Army Is Able to Make Tanks Invisible?

Posted November 1st, 2007 by Mihnea Boiangiu

The British Ministry of Defense announced it can make tanks invisible using the new technology. The Army predicted that such a tank will be available in 2012. The technology uses cameras and projectors that actually project the surrounding environment onto the tank. Consequently, if someone looks in the direction of the vehicle, he will only see what’s beyond it.

Invisible tank

This “invisible technology” is more like an illusion for the eyes. The tank exists, it is there on the field, but the cameras and projectors hide it for enemy’s sight. I believe this is possible, because the technology evolves every day. It seems the Army also prepares an invisible jacket based on the same principle. Perhaps in ten years from now the army troops won’t need to battle anymore because they don’t see each other.

excuse me? that’s obviously a badly-taken photo that has nothing to do with invisibility. The picture was taken as the recoil from firing the gun was moving the tank backwards.

somehow they have the material projecting the background image even covering the treads?? i think not.

      …taken as the recoil…
I do not think that is even it - I would assume this was a simple photoshop (painting) affect to show the reader “invisibility”

The real question is - what the heck good is it? How often do we even seen the real thing now, we see THERMAL images and adding a camera and projector will just make the thermal image even greater and the thermal guided ammunition will just get them, hidden or not by a pretty picture.

When tanks become invisible, the enemy would probably just develop better heat seeking technology, which would make being invisible kind of pointless. Unless of course, they can make a zero heat dissipating tank and ‘cold armour’ for the soldiers.

      Not recoil, just photoshopped.

We didn’t say that was the real picture of the invisible tank. Don’t get us wrong :) It’s just a picture used to make it easier to understand.

the same could be done, in theory with all spectrums of light be it IR, UV, visible, microwave etc. that said, its photoshopped anyway.

Wouldn’t you see grass moving and footprints though?

JD, it’s Photoshop. Tanks guns are designed to handle the recoil without transferring it to the rest of the tank. If not, the recoil would dislodge the gun and most likely kill the crew inside before it moved an entire tank. I’m not intending to be mean here, just can’t resist stating the facts: think about the physics involved.
