Poker players challanged by computers
Posted July 24th, 2007 by Alex Ion
As you know smart computers have already beaten top players of chess, backgammon or checkers. It looks like poker is the next challenge. The University of Alberta developed a computer several years ago that was defeated by poker champion Phil Laak but only because the scientists allowed him examine the programming code to see how the computer will play the hand. Neat, but this time it won’t be like that.
The game will be held at the annual conference of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence in Vancouver, British Columbia, on Monday where Laak will play with his pro colleague Ali Eslami. Each of them will be in separate rooms where they will virtually play against of eachother with Eslami getting the cards the computer is getting in the other room, and viceversa.
This is supposed to be the first man-machine confrontation where they expect to eliminate the luck of the draw.
