Nokia Anounces 3 New Products

Posted January 8th, 2007 by Marius Trusculescu

As everybody expected today CES brought a lot of announcements from producers all around the world. The mobile phone market occupied a large part in the media coverage as new devices were announced by all the major competitors (the Treo 750, Sony’s W200 Walkman, etc). Looking to keep its leading position, Nokia introduced 3 new very fresh products this morning: N76, N800 and N93i.
Nokia's lineup

N76 is a clamshell phone which packs a 2 Mp camera and serves as a digital media player as well. Because the features offered could require an increase in the storage capacity, Nokia included a mini SD slot to ensure you can expand the memory size to have a bigger playlist. Looking at the applications we notice the phone also includes web browsing, instant messaging and an email client.

The N93i is the masterpiece of this lineup. Priced somewhere near the $800 mark the product is to be released in March 2007. Some of the features worth mentioning are the 3.2 Mp camera, the wireless connectivity and the 1Gb mini SD card included in the box. The 3.2 Mp camera can also save videos at 30fps and the video content can be streamed directly to a TV.

The last, but not the least is the N800. This device was offered in stores starting from the end of last week. I do not know if it was a mistake by Nokia or the sellers, but the specifications of this open source product were already known this morning at CES. Anyway I have to present it, as it is my personal favorite because of all the PC-like functions included. The display is a 800×480 one with a touchscreen functions that can simulate a QWERTY keyboard when needed. There are also WiFi 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth, webcam, instant messaging, email client, web browser (Opera 8.0) and Skype functionalities were also announced. The best part is the price as it has been set at just $399.

This article is very misleading on N800.

N800 is not a phone. It is successor to N770 which is also called ‘Internet Tablet’. It has no GSM inside, only WiFi and BlueTooth. N770 was rather an experiment, something unexpected from phone company - but I guess it was a success and that is why there is a successor. N770 and now N800 is unique as a device running almost normal Linux distribution (based on Debian) including X server and modified GTK2 environment. Its CPU does have a real MMU unlike other palm sized devices so things like swap to card work and it uses almost stock kernel 2.6.1x.

Also N800 does not have Skype client, it is only planned and expected to be available during the year.

      Note: I have N770.
