Girl Geeks on the Rise

Posted March 31st, 2008 by Alex Ion

Geek girl message

A recent study from Solutions Research Group, came up with a staggering fact. We, , are no longer the absolute owners of gadgets and the real definition of “”. Girl are now ahead of in activities like streaming network TV, DVR use, and casual gaming, the and Digital Lifestyles report (PDF link) said.

70% of say they played a PC game last month vs. 69% of .

Though I don’t like to lose supremacy over gadgets and tech in general I’m certain having more to talk the Gadgetish (new language) is good. We have a lot in common now, don’t we? I wish they will love football and soccer in the near future …

Any girl who wants to be geeky is great for everyone ;)

    2. Mike Says:

Rather, I think it’s time for men to stop caring about stupid boring mindless things like sports and start caring about things women care about like fashion, design, movies that don’t involve car chases. Can’t be all taking no giving guys!

    3. Jeremy Says:

      Mike. What. the. hell.
“stupid boring mindless things like sports” i can agree with that. thats fair.
but start caring about “fashion, design and movies?” WHAT THE ****? how is that not stupid boring and mindless? fashion is the most shallow, vapid, and, to be blunt, RETARDED things to worry about. design i get. its fairly important. but movies. not all men dislike movies that dont have car chases. maybe its just the ones that you date.

    4. Val Says:

I don’t think girls are quite the gamer geeks that you would think. I believe that the question, if asked as stated above, merely asks people if they play games on a computer. They don’t ask what kind of games they play though… which means those stupid, addictive games on places like MSN or Yahoo! or any of the other many sites would count to them as playing computer games. And if that’s true, then we need to look at the definition of a gamer… are these people now classified as “gamers”?

But you guys will be happy to know that I am an actual girl geek. Sports are mindless and boring, but give me a computer to fix and I’m thrilled.

    5. Mary Poppin' Caps Says:

My wife’s pregnant. We’re naming the kid Qwerty.

    6. AJ Says:

Qwerty the boy? Or Qwerty the girl?
Either way, it’s an awesome name.

      Also, Mike’s a dumbass.

    7. Pete Says:

      Girls dont Technically “GAME”

They might play the small card games, or free download, yahoo, and pogo games, But a REAL gamer builds his own PC, buys his games.

Women watch more of their sitcom/ drama / soapopera/ reality shows than men. Does not mean they are geeks. I know geek girls and they do none of what is listed. DVR…. I didnt know DVR was a gadget… Men are to lazy to use it and we don’t care. This post is false and needs to be rewritten. Gadgets.. please define gadgets and which ones.

    8. LadyMayhem Says:

Wow, Pete, that’s amazingly small minded of you. Because of course, no girl could possibly know how to build a computer or buy a game. I obviously have no idea how to do anything that’s remotely geeky, due to having breasts and no penis. Jesus, were you born in the Stone Age?
I happen to spend a lot of time hanging around with a mixed-sex group, all of whom could be described as geeks. Some of the guys couldn’t build a computer with step by step instructions, and some of the girls have most of the 3rd ed Dungeons and Dragons books memorised. You can’t overgeneralise to the ridiculousness of your above statements, BECAUSE THEY’RE JUST NOT TRUE.

Get out, meet some people, and learn that girls have more in their heads then just clothes and guys, alright? Some of us can play FPS and kick your ass.

    9. Andy Says:

Could someone please explain to me how sports are mindless?

    10. Rachel Says:

Pete, what’s your Steam ID? I’d like to show you how I game.

Or do you only have WoW characters and a Dell with some tack-on LEDs?

      /laying down the gauntlet

    11. Jakab Says:

“Sports are mindless and boring, but give me a computer to fix and I’m thrilled.”

I’m going to have to agree with Val on this one.

    12. joe Says:

    13. joe Says:

This vast audience is fueling the growth of this multi-billion dollar industry and bringing jobs to communities across the nation. Below is a list of the top 10 entertainment software industry facts:

Hi pleasant post. I think these leads might be useful overly. Now the solid pick up lines are the ones that lighter the woman. Straightaway roughly of the lines might just be in all good fun to help discover the ice. That is rattling and it can at long last lead to landing up in sleep together with her at the end of the night. Heck what man doesn’t want that, but familiar what to pronounce and how to pull it off can need a bit of practice. A rattling pick up line will take you in the door but from there you have to be confident enough to hold the conversation active.

    27. mtg2192 Says:

What the fuck is the deal with people? First of all, women who are good at computers are not few and far between: my mother is a computer programmer by trade, and my father, though impressed with computers and apt with them, has no intention to ever go beyond using other people’s software.

Yet I, a man, am arguably far quicker and smarter with my computers than my mom.

The thing is, there are always men who are good with computers, men who are average with computers, and men who suck at computers, just as there are women who are good with computers, women who suck with computers, and women average with computers.

You cannot generalize about either gender, as they are equal. They do have their differences, however, and they also often hold themselves to different standards. A man will often consider himself a better person if he is aggressive, risk-taking, and logical. A woman will often consider herself a better person if she is more passive, safe, and compassionate. Take note that this is not to say that all women are this way or that all men are this way. It is just that the genders as a whole are different.

However it is safe to say that women online are more likely to be playing games like Farmville on facebook or online social things like gaia online, while men are more likely to play first person shooters and roleplaying games. Once again, this is not always true. There are lots of men who play farmville, as it is not really gender descript, and i’m sure some men are on gaia online. Also, there are tons of women who play RPGs (MMORPGs more popular online among both genders), and there are plenty of women who play first person shooters. But I would not be surprised if it swung one way or the other.

By the way ladies, when a lot of men respond negatively about “advances” in gender equality (times when women exceed men in generally male-dominated industries or roles), they respond this way not out of hatred for women, but out of fear that they will live in a world where they have less rights than women. I would be lying if I said that I did not feel this fear, as many men would. But this is pretty much the essence of modern “sexism.” It’s pretty much just a negative response to fear.

And a lot of this fear comes from the fact that we have reached a point where women are making the same amount of money as men if they choose the same jobs, and they are getting as many jobs as men, and they are being treated as well as men. Men are fearful because there are things that threaten their ability to be self-sufficient, like affirmative action and any of the results of feminism, still in existence even though we live in a society that could be called equal.

Men who act sexist are usually not calling for the oppression of women but the equality of men. That’s all I’m really trying to say.

I believe this does not apply in my little plot named Hickville, but I agree nonetheless. And Mike, not all women are into fashion and dramas. I resent that on behalf of my level 12 hafling ranger (Our DM isn’t responding to our needs so I’m a really low level) who cares more about destroying those pesky orcish scum than walking around in bright red pumps.

To top that, I find I congratulate little Qwerty on his/her new name and when I find a male companion equal to my intellectual level, or by least plays WoW or something (as well as other qualities, mind you) I will end up calling my first son Cthulhu. A plan of action always helps.
