EarthLink CEO Garry Betty dies of cancer

Posted January 4th, 2007 by Alex Ion

Garry was at once the general you wanted at your side in battle and the friend you wanted to celebrate with when the war was won“, said Sky Dayton, EarthLink founder and CEO of mobile phone operator Helio in a statement.

Garry Betty died yesterday at the age of 49 of cancer. He was involved with Earthlink since 1996, and before coming to Earthlink he was a CEO of data communications specialist Digital Communications Associates and at that time, the youngest CEO of a New York stock exchange company.

In November 2006, Garry Betty had been diagnosed with “a serious form of cancer” after which he took a medical leave. He was replaced back then with Mike Lunsford as an interim, and he will remain interim for the time being.

Garry’s family requested those wishing to pay their respects can also send donations to the cancer research foundation he has set up. For more info about the foundation or for your comments visit Garry’s tribute blog.
