Dell To Sell Linux Powered Computers

Posted February 27th, 2007 by Marius Trusculescu

Apparently the computer maker is giving into people’s pressure just like with the introduction of AMD based products. DellLinux recently announced it will start shipping desktops and notebooks with pre-installed Linux on them and consumers are the only ones to blame.

Last week Dell did set-up two websites (www.dellideastorm.com and www.studiodell.com) to get the consumers opinions and suggestions on their products and apparently the number one request was clearly for Linux products. For the time being Dell is only working with Novell, the company behind the SUSE distribution, but, as many distribution have been requested, they intend on letting the users decide what Linux flavor will be installed on their desktop or notebook.

Other open source solutions were also requested to be pre-installed on computers, like the Firefox web browser or the Open Office suite and Dell is looking into that too. However, the company stills recommends Windows to their consumers and this might take years to change.
