Chinese Spam Nightmare
Posted July 10th, 2009 by simon

It is estimated that around 90% of all email last month was in fact spam. It is a voracious, never ending stream of drivel and it wastes countless hours of our time and energy. More than half of that junk mail is from domain names registered in China, sent from computers in China or it guides people back to sites hosted in China. A security researcher at the University of Alabama is now calling for Chinese domain registrars to stop burying their heads in the sand and do something about it. He has targeted eName and Xin Net in particular because they continue to turn a blind eye.
Part of the problem is the well established practice of providing services to criminals at a premium price in return for ignoring complaints. It is hoped that by naming and shaming the companies involved the great tide of spam might be reduced. The so-called Computer Emergency Response Teams in China have been trying to do combat the spammers but they lack the resources to get the job done. Let’s hope the government weighs in and cracks down on irresponsible companies
