Apple TV already hacked to run XviD

Posted March 23rd, 2007 by Mihnea Boiangiu

In the image below you can see playing an episode of LOST series, encoded in XviD extension. That should be nothing abnormal, but it is played on Apple TV. How could this be possible? It’s simple! The Apple TV has already been hacked.

Apple TV

That should not be so hard according to the users of this forum. They teach you how to do it. First of all, you should take out the Apple TV’s hard disk and then to connect it to a Mac. As Walt Mossberg said, the hard disk is seen by the Mac like a normal HFS volume. The next step is to install the SSH server Dropbear and a simple custom script. After doing that you could watch some XviD movies.

However we don’t recommend you to do that hack from many reasons. You could damage the device and you could loose the guarantee certificate. On the other hand is so tempting to view some movies on the big screen…
