You may not have heard of Lala.com because they’ve been snapped up by Apple not long after starting up. The company was threatening to break the dominance of the MP3 market with a new piece of software which allows you to stream songs instead of having to download them. Users are able to buy the right to stream songs on their iPhones from a digital locker for a limited period for only 10 cents per song. It offers 8 million tracks in total whereas iTunes offers 11 million. It is thought that iTunes account for around 70% of all online digital music sales.
The quality is definitely lower than the tracks being sold on Apple’s iTunes but they play within seconds and are being offered at a much cheaper price. Apple bought the company, who originally launched in 2006, for an undisclosed fee. An Apple spokesman said “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time and we generally do not comment on our purpose or plans,” It could be that a new streaming service will be added to iTunes in due course.
