The Smallest 8.4 MP CIS

Posted April 2nd, 2007 by Marius Trusculescu

Samsung recently unveiled what they called the smallest 8.4 MP (megapixel) CIS (CMOS Image Sensor) in the world. Apparently the new Samsung solution is comparable in results with the CCD (Charged Coupled Devices) sensors which currently have the lead in image quality.

Furthermore the CMOS sensor have always had lower power consumptions and the new device has a tenth of the power requirements needed for CCD sensors. These facts lead Samsung to believe the new CMOS will be chosen over the CCD
in digital cameras, mobile phones and camcorders.

The 8 MP sensor is expected to be available in the second half of 2007, so until then producers will have to chose from Samsung’s the available 1.3 to 5 MP CIS.
