Samsung Boosts Memory Chips

Posted March 12th, 2007 by Marius Trusculescu

After Toshiba unveiled last month their new high-density memory chips, Samsung today announced they have started shipping samples of an 8 GB (giga-byte) memory chip to major mobile electronics manufactures. The new memory model feature 4 16 Gb (giga-bit) chips fabricated using the 50 nm technology process.

Todays announcement marks a big evolution from the 4 GB modules available now since Samsung managed not only to double the capacity, but the performance too. The new chip uses Samsung’s moviNand technology and it can process data with speeds of up to 52 MB/s.

Although the sample delivery process has already begun, the new chip will enter mass production in the second quarter of this year, so mobile products based on this memory are expected to hit the market at an even later date.
