The Surprising Nintendo Wii

Posted January 6th, 2007 by Marius Trusculescu

Why is the Wii console surprising? Because it brought the fun factor back to the gaming experience. In a industry that’s only focus seems to be better graphics, Nintendo proved that games are meant to entertain trough game play and not trough sharpThe Wiier details and lifelike textures.

This console is not a hardware beast not having all the latest technology breakthroughs on board. Under the cool white case there is is a PowerPC processor running at 729 MHz and an ATI GPU clocked at 243 MHz with 88 MB of memory. You may notice there is no hard drive available (yet) and, consequently, game saves are only available using SD memory cards. Besides the SD slot and a DVD drive the connectivity of Wii is achieved with two USB ports, a wireless module, and of course Bluetooth module for the wireless controller.

I remember last spring when Nintendo first introduced the name and the specs of their new gaming console, there were a lot of analyst that gave the Wii as a sure looser when facing the Xbox and the PS3. They were also mocking the revolutionary new controller saying people will never use such a product because it would make them look silly while gesturing in the air imitating a tennis swing or a sword attack. Now it is proven fact that Nintendo’ gaming console is a sure success as consumers see Wii as more entertaining when compared with the two rivals. The controller played a big part in the fun factor of Wii, but the games available at the launch were also a good asset (The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess definitely worth mentioning).
