The SR1 (Solar Disk) USB Flash Memory

Posted February 15th, 2007 by Marius Trusculescu

When I first came across this device I immediately thought “Why would I need a power supply for my USB stick?”. It turns A-Data Solar Disk powered USB Memory Stickout the A-DATA Flash disk uses the solar panels to power a small LCD display showing the available space on disk.

Although this has been done before, apparently A-DATA is the first to use solar panels and no batteries to supply the energy required for performing the task. The product comes in 512 MB, 1 GB and 2 GB flavors and is USB 2.0 compatible supporting speeds of up to 480 Mbps on almost any OS (Windows, Mac OS X and Linux).

Even if the device might prove useful I must confess I don’t see it as something more than a way to make a statement about being environmental friendly.
