Yet Another UMPC
Posted January 19th, 2007 by Marius Trusculescu
As there are more and more products in the UMPC (Ultra Mobile PC) category I predict that the year 2007 will be a year of impressive growth for such devices. This opinion is based on the number of the new emerging solutions addressing the problems implied by such small devices, especially in the energy saving and battery lifetime increasing areas.
The LE1600 Tablet PC from Motion Computing is the one I will be focusing on during this presentation. Under its hood there is an Intel Pentium M processor based on the Centrino technology that is clocked at 1.5 GHz. Even if the 30 GB hard drive and the 512 MB memory are comparable to the low-entry laptops available on the market today, the size of the packing, 29.6 cm x 24 cm x 2.2 cm (approx. 11.6″x10″x 0.85″), is the most important aspect when addressing the portability issue. The 12.1″ LCD the screen is impressive for this kind of device making it easier to work with but it might be a little to big for a UMPC loosing on the portability aspect.
To cover the connectivity of the device I will add the WiFi 802.11b/g wireless adapter, the 2 USB 2.0 ports, the Ethernet and the Bluetooth support. A major downsize is the lack of a keyboard, but the producer tried to compensate by adding a 5-way navigation button and a digital pen.
All the features I mentioned, and some others more, came at a price of $1,999. I let you decide if that is to much or it is worth it as the outcome will be finally decided by you, the consumers.
