Posted January 16th, 2007 by Alex Ion

The fastest hard drive ever, as Seagate calls it, Savvio 15k is built on PMR technology and has a 2.5″ SAS enterprise hard drive at 15,000 rpm speed. They have launched two models, one with 36GB and one with 73GB. They are intended to replace the 3.5″ Seagate Cheetah 15k series and to over-perform the Savvio 10k line-up.

As for advantages, comparing the new 2.5″ models with 3.5″ (Cheetah) models, besides the dimensions they also have less power consumption, up-to 25%, and seeking time is about 10% better. Transfer rates are also improved by 40%. The new Savvio 15k models have 1.6 million hours MTBF versus 1.4 million hours on the old Cheetah 15k.

Seagate didn’t announce a release date and assured that 14 million units are waiting to be on shelves during 2007. No price have been disclosed yet, but prepare to spend some money for the top product of Seagate’s.
