Google Rolls Out PageRank, To Kill Blog Farms

Posted Thursday, October 25th, 2007 by Alex Ion

This will be considered a milestone in all this Google PageRank buzz, because the last few days showed that Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) is really on it this time. Annoyed by the fact that people abuse the PR and makes money out of it, the algorithm changed to penalize link farms. This is still an assumption, though having Matt Cutts screaming everywhere about it, we believe this is the case.

Google PageRank

So far, Google rewarded blogs that people linked to, with high PageRank and everyone used it as a method of appreciation of how good the blog is. However this changed very sudden with top ranking blogs like Engadget going from PR7 to PR5, AutoBlog going from PR6 to PR4 and DownloadSquad to PR4 down from PR5.

The problem I see now, and TechCrunch mentioned, is with small blog networks that relied on PR in order to make sales. A blog without traffic could sell because of the rank, but now if Google is trying to catch everyone I am not sure if they might close their doors.

Mobile Firefox from Mozilla, are you ready?

Posted Wednesday, October 10th, 2007 by Alex Ion

Firefox MobileMozilla’s VP of Engineerring, Mike Schroepfer, announced that with all these developments on mobile phones nowadays it’s time for Mozilla to go mobile with “no compromise” to security or other issues. Firefox is the world’s most popular open-source browser and with a market of 20 mobile devices to outnumber 1 computer I think they will do good.

First Mozilla needs to finish developing Firefox 3 before they release the mobile version that will be able to run Firefox extensions and allow people to build rich applications via XUL. Two new people have been accounted in the team: Christian Sejersen, head of browsers at Openwave (NSDQ: OPWV) and Brad Lassey which moved from France Telecom (NYSE: FTE) R&D.

To make sure it’s clear here’s what Mike Schroepfer said:

* Mozilla will add mobile devices to the first class/tier-1 platform set for Mozilla2. This means we will make core platform decisions with mobile devices as first-class citizens.

* We will ship a version of “Mobile Firefox” which can, among other things, run Firefox extensions on mobile devices and allow others to build rich applications via XUL.

Ubuntu announced for Dell Computers

Posted Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007 by Mihnea Boiangiu

UbuntuDell announced on their blog that Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn was chosen for Dell computers. Their customers will receive a computer with default Ubuntu media including kernel and applications. Dell will configure and install the open-source drivers for hardware if that will be possible. If don’t they will use the closed source drivers like in the Intel wireless cards case or Conexant modems.

Dell has already developed a wiki page at linux.dell.com website. There you could find technical details, information about the problems and fixes. To avoid any problems with the printers, Dell recommends the printers that have PostScript engines in them.

Dell has told that the company is looking to work with the hardware vendors to improve the quality of the associated Linux drivers. Furthermore, Dell announces that they won’t offer any support for audio and video codecs. These codecs aren’t distributed with the Ubuntu OS.

The first computers with Linux OS are: the E520, 1505 and XPS 410. Dell will ship the new Linux based computers starting this Thursday, 5/24.

Apple confirmed today a rumor regarding the delay in the development of the future Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) operating system. Apparently the blame is put on the much awaited iPhone, which, according to Apple, needed extensive work from the Mac OS software team.

Posted Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007 by Mihnea Boiangiu

We’ve just found a new version of Live Linux, called NimbleX. The word is enthusiastic. This new version is a small operating system based on Slackware with the use of linux-live scripts. NimbleX require low storage because it has only 200MB. According to its creator, Bogdan Radulescu, the NimbleX was specially designed for the mini disc. However it works from USB memory drives too.

Nimblex Live Linux

NimbleX has a beautiful graphical interface, and many utilities. It features a built-in browser, media player and office utilities. NimbleX can automatically detect and mount all the partitions, so it will be easier for you to access data on any computer without knowing the password, says Bogdan Radulescu. NimbleX software is free to download, because it is an open-source software. All the reviews for the program were positive, so we strongly recommend it.
