BenQ's touchscreen phone concept

BenQ has released a new touchscreen phone concept. It seems they were inspired by the Apple iPhone. Although we can’t compare the two phones, the BenQ concept is really nice. The unnamed model features a large LCD touchscreen like the iPhone. The new model has a sliding panel which can turn the phone in a classic mobile when in the middle or in a media player when it goes to the top/bottom.

No other details about the phone were found. The design house Product Visionaries has just given the directions BenQ has to follow. We hope we will see a serious competitor for the iPhone. Who knows?!

The P51 - Another All-in-One Mobile Phone

Posted Monday, February 5th, 2007 by Marius Trusculescu

I really love the expression “all-in-one” and I like even more the devices that qualify for that expression, therefore I likeBenq P51 mobile phone front the P51 mobile phone by BenQ-Siemens.

So what has the P51 to offer? As you would expect from an all-in-one device there is wireless LAN, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, GPS navigation, PDA functions and of course quad band mobile telephony (GSM/GPRS 850/900/1800/1900 MHz). A 1.3 MP digital camera was also included which being capable of video recording, and the appropriate software for video and audio playback together with the photo editing application offer a complete multimedia experience.

As for the PDA functionalities, the hardware that provides all the computing power is an Intel Xscale processor clocked at 416 MHz benefiting from a 64MB Mobile SDRAM and 192MB Flash ROM memory. Just like in all the new mobile devices, the storage capacity can be increased by the means of a memory card inserted in theBenq P51 mobile phone back SD/MMC slot. On this hardware a Microsoft Windows Mobile V5 operating system will make sure you can perform almost any task trough the installed applications, like the Office for mobile phones package, the Internet browser, email and calendar client (with synchronization) and many others.

I remember no more than a year ago it was hard to find a telephone with PDA capabilities that will incorporate GPS positioning and a wireless connection and almost everything you found lacked at least one of this functionalities. We find ourselves now with plenty of such devices (many of which I or my colleagues have wrote about here at DevicePedia) and it’s tougher and tougher to pick one so we are trying to bring you all the important information when searching for such devices.

The EF71 Music Phone

Posted Monday, January 29th, 2007 by Marius Trusculescu

BenQ-Siemens design was always great but they’ve managed to outdone themselves with the gorgeous EF71 mobile phone. With such great looks this phone is already very sexy, but it turns to be even more appealing if you stop and look under the hood.

BenQ-Siemens EF71Besides making phone calls the main purpose of the EF71 is the music playback (maybe even more important than the calls). The ability to listen to music without even flipping the phone open comes to support my prior statement. Moreover on the exterior OLED display you can see relevant informations regarding the songs playing and under the display there is a set of buttons for performing common functions like play/pause and move to next/last song. Music can also be listened from radio stations as the EF71 has a built-in FM receiver, but a FM transmitter also allows you to stream songs from your phone to your other devices.

Besides music the device also provides a good video experience with the included 2MP digital camera that also has the possibility to record video files at 30 fps with the storage capacity as the only limit. And that is a real problem as this capacity is limited to only 24 MB. But a solution is also available as the EF71 includes an microSD slot for expanding the initial memory (to reach a maximum capacity of 2 GB) and a 256 MB memory card is shipped with the mobile phone.

BenQ-Siemens EF81

Posted Monday, January 15th, 2007 by Marius Trusculescu

Shrinking is the new trend in the mobile phone making industry and Benq-Siemens has brought the fight to a new level with its latest clamshell.

The EF81 is one of the new know-it-all products, incorporating all the latest technology available but without trying to replace the PC. Without claiming a spot in the smartphone arena this new tri-band phone turns to be great for multimedia applications as it can play the most common video and audio file types. But, this success is downsized by the lack of an FM tuner, and not even the presence of a 2 MP digital camera can make up for that mistake.

Besides the multimedia features, this phone’s office tools (the email, the organizer, the web browser and the Microsoft Outlook synchronizing) hint towards a low-cost smartphone that can’t handle office files. The EF81 turns to be a middle solutions that might prove a success as consumers tend to like tasting all the tech flavors at once.
