Negroponte presented the 2nd Generation OLPC Laptop

Posted Wednesday, May 21st, 2008 by Mihnea Boiangiu

Nicholas Negroponte unveiled yesterday at One Laptop Per Child Foundation media event the 2nd generation laptop. The foundation plans to release the 2nd-generation device by 2010. Unlike its predecessor, the XO laptop, the new addition would feature two 16:9 LCD screens and would fold-up like an e-book device.

XO 2.0 Laptop

The new laptop would cost $75, which is very encouraging regarding the $188 price for XO model. The low pricing would be a result of using screens built for DVD players: “The reason you can have the audacity to do this is that the 16:9 displays on DVD players are so inexpensive that to anticipate them costing $20 each is not out of the question,” explained Negroponte.

The XO 2.0 was designed by the hardware design firm Pixel Qi. The double-screened device is smaller than XO laptop, that being an advantage for the children and consumes only 1 watt. OLPC has announced to launch a new version of the XO model (XO 1.5) that would have a price tag around $100.

Intel’s Notebook, the Eco PC

Posted Sunday, March 23rd, 2008 by Alex Ion

Intel Eco PC (notebook)

It’s just recently that new info about Intel’s designed for education notebook surfaced. This is how the Eco PC (or the Classmate PC) is going to look. So far it’s rumored to be a 10-inch laptop with a 9-inch display that weighs a little under 3 pounds and will sell for sub-$400. It’s supposed to run on a 900MHz Celeron processors, with 512MB of RAM, a 40GB hard drive, built-in WiFi and Ethernet. It has decent specs for a $400 laptop.

I am sure Intel is trying to take on the OLPC, Asus` Eee PC or any other Eee PC rivals like HP’s 2133 UMPC. We’ll probably have to wait for the official release before we’re certain of what’s inside and can give a verdict. Meanwhile see more photos.

HP dv3000 launched in Asia

Posted Saturday, March 22nd, 2008 by Alex Ion

HP dv3000

The new HP dv3000 has been announced for Asia. It’s a redesigned version of the dv2000 they’ve released 2 years ago and since it’s cool to have a 13.3-inch display this is what you get. It has pretty interesting specs with a 2.5GHz T9300 Penryn Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of RAM, GeForce Go 8400M graphics that outputs HDMI or a 160GB hard drive. Of course there are others like a VGA webcam, a dual layer burner and a combo USB / eSATA port.

The price is $1,399, the date is May and the continent is Asia. Too bad for the rest of us.
