i-STATION N7tu navigation system

Posted Tuesday, July 10th, 2007 by Mihnea Boiangiu

i-Station N7tu

The new i-Station model was launched. It is a GPS system that has DMB channels. A 7″ TFT touchscreen and the Windows OS transform this device in a portable media player. It can run different audio, video formats, and also has PiP capability. You can choose between a 30GB or 60GB hard drive to store all your data. Talking about storage, our device support SD cards and USB connection.

i-Station N7tu

It comes with a fancy navigation software (Mappy United) that can display the Korean skyline in the background with realistic 3D buildings, says Navigadget. The i-STATION N7tu utilizes the SiRF Star III GPS receiver that also includes an external antenna. To be considered a real PMP, the system was conceived with stereo speakers. However, the bad news comes from the battery (1000mAh) that can’t offer a good working time. Thus you should keep the i-Station connected, as it consumes a lot of energy. There are no price details. All I know is this device was released in Korea. So, there are slight chances to see it sooner.

LG LN740 GPS guides you anywhere

Posted Wednesday, May 30th, 2007 by Mihnea Boiangiu

LG LN740 was reviewed by the team from GPSMagazine. The conclusion was that LG LN740 handled very well the challenges. The routing engine has been the most praised part. Its reviewers said that the LG LN740 successfully surpasses the competitors from Garmin, Magellan and TomTom.

LG LN740 GPS

The LG LN740 is an excellent GPS system. Probably its software engineers have made a top product. The Navteq maps on board include US and Canada. In addition a 2GB flash memory card includes Porto Rico’s map. The interface is simple, the maps provide a multitude of POIs. Also the device can receive real-time traffic data. That would help you to avoid the crowded areas or the traffic jams. The 4″ display doesn’t provide such quality like the competitors devices, but overall LG LN740 GPS system is a good product. You can buy this GPS for $450 from Amazon.

Kenwood MNA-350 compact car system

Posted Tuesday, May 8th, 2007 by Mihnea Boiangiu

You know Kenwood, the Japanese radio communication giant. I found an interesting product at Akihabara News. It is the car system Kenwood MNA-350. Why it is so special? I will give you the details right away.

Kenwood MNA-350

Kenwood MNA-350 is obviously an entertainment system, but also it features a built-in GPS module. The system comes standard with the Kei-cars in Japan. It has CD player and radio, and also supports connection with iPods. The Kenwood system can play MP3, AAC and WMA audio files.

The built-in GPS system is in fact a 3.5″ screen that guides you where you need. The software can be upgraded using the SD card slot. I find the device very useful as its price is included in the car’s price in fact. So you get both a music system and a GPS. Cool! - MIHNEA BOIANGIU

Homemade speed camera detector

Posted Monday, May 7th, 2007 by Alex Ion

You know we’ve presented you red-light cameras detectors and different high class GPS radar detectors so that you don’t hook-up some trouble on the road. It looks like some Sweedish guy has a pretty nice hack to hide a speed camera detector (which is mostly illegal) by integrating it into the sun shield. It costs less and it’s more practical.

The homemade version of a common speed camera detector is mostly useful in Sweden. It gets the location of th speed cameras from a database that it queries with the built-in GPS it has. Though this example is only good for Scandinavian countries, the concept could be used world wide, and I am talking about the hidden small LCD that shows you info.

The developer of this new device is going to help those that need to build their own system at home, but since Engadget already posted the news I can bet he’s going to get a ton of new emails that will either block his account or make him mad and he would come out with the recipe. - ALEX ION

Clarion MAX9700DT navigator

Posted Monday, April 30th, 2007 by Mihnea Boiangiu

Clarion Japan has recently launched a new GPS system called Clarion MAX9700DT. The device is special because it offers GPS navigation and entertainment in the same unit. The Clarion MAX9700DT navigator will be available from June at the price of ¥341,250, nearly $2850.

Clarion MAX9700DT navigator

The price would be too much just for a GPS system, but MAX9700DT packs many entertainment features. It has a built-in TV tuner, 40GB HDD and DVD drive. The 1-seg TV tuner broadcasts TV stations for mobile devices. This one is available for all models, but the top ones have a digital tuner to pick up all the free stations in your area.

What could you do with all that entertainment features without a good screen? Clarion MAX9700DT has a 7″widescreen touch LCD display so you won’t have any trouble. In addition the device has a good audio system (5.1) and AM/FM radio.

The GPS module offers the regular 3D street details, but the software can search for shops and stores based on data transmitted on digital TV channels. - MIHNEA BOIANGIU

Sony NV-U92T navigation with slim ultra wide display

Posted Friday, March 30th, 2007 by Alex Ion

Sony NV-U92T super slim

Thanks to the picture you may think this is some kind of HD TV that you put in your car to teach you where to drive to. Nothing but right, because the new Sony NV-U92T is only 20mm depth and has a ultra wide 4.8-inch touch screen display. The GPS devices market is big and the demand becomes higher and higher so Sony wants a piece of it.

Sony NV-U92T has a few key features like linear route waypoints display, gesture commands, 2GB flash memory and the ability to connect memory sticks into the slot, TMC receiver and the smart position plus that will not interrupt your route when the GPS signal is not powerful enough: like driving through a tunnel, between tall buildings or anything that could prevent the signal to get to it. Rumors say it may also have Bluetooth, but we doubt it so far. No release date or a price yet, just some pictures.

Bushnell ONIX 400 - Weather Data GPS

Posted Friday, March 30th, 2007 by Mihnea Boiangiu

Bushnell ONIX 400 The Bushnell ONIX 400 GPS system will provide weather data in real-time. The handheld device gives you information about the directions and warnings about the weather status through the XM system. Because Bushnell ONIX 400 is designed for outdoor use it is waterproof.

The GPS device features an extra large 3.5″ full-color LCD screen (320×240 pixel resolution), an embedded 64Mb MicroSD card for data and map services and a rechargeable Li-Ion battery. The price could go around $500. The Bushnell ONIX 400 is going to be available from this summer.

Personally I think the Bushnell ONIX 400 would better offer traffic information combined with weather warnings, because let’s face it, you don’t travel so fast to unknown weather destinations.
