Xbox Live Ban

xbox live

The big ban which was rolled out by Microsoft blocked access for up to a million Xbox 360 owners who had modified their consoles. Modded Xbox 360s can play pirated games and Microsoft was obviously keen to crack down on the practice so they banned those users. The chipped Xbox 360s are permanently banned so users who want to get access back to will in theory have to splash out for a new console.

The timing of the ban was suspicious and has led to legal action. The contention is that Microsoft deliberately timed the ban for the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 because they knew the game would bring in a huge amount of sign ups and traffic for the service. A Texas law company named Abingdon IP is trying to persuade banned users to join their planned class action suit against Microsoft. They are also seeking banned people who haven’t been refunded their subscription fee.

onlive

You’ve probably heard of . There are a couple of services working on it right now and the basic idea is that you’ll be able to play the latest games on an old machine because you won’t have it installed locally, instead you’ll connect to a remote high end machine or console and play the game across the web. One of the services is called OnLive and they have already shown off the technology working so you could connect to the service and play the latest FPS with all the bells and whistles on your netbook or old PC.

The latest announcement from OnLive is that their service can work on mobile phones too. They demonstrated the service running on two iPhones and apparently you will be able to play games with friends or even spectate on their games. The service will also work across the platforms so you could be watching a buddy who is playing on his PC. They haven’t announced a release date yet and I suppose it remains to be seen how the mobile phone companies will react to the idea.

PSP go

The new has been released by Sony. It is basically a more compact, slide open version of the PSP. It retains the gorgeous 3.8 inch LCD but the controls slide out from beneath the screen now to reduce the overall size. Sony has also packed in a few more features. It has 16 GB of memory as standard and you can add more with a Memory Stick. It also has support for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. You can access the PlayStation Network for free and buy games, TV, music and movies. You can also browse the internet. They’ve even added a built in microphone so you can use to chat on Skype.

The doesn’t take discs so all the content is downloaded direct and stored digitally which saves a lot of hassle. The has drawn a lot of criticism from existing fans and PSP owners because it is not compatible with the all the games and movies they may already have bought for the PSP. Judging it as a new customer it looks to be a nifty gaming device which you could also use as a mobile TV, digital audio player and internet browser. It costs just under $250.

Wii Drops in Price

Posted Thursday, September 24th, 2009 by simon

Nintendo Wii

The console war has really taken off in the last few weeks. First Sony announced a price drop and a new slim PS3. Following that Microsoft dropped the price of the Xbox 360. Now Nintendo have dropped the price of the market leading Wii console. The Wii is $50 cheaper than before and will be selling for $199.99 from Sunday. It looks like the package will remain the same so your money gets you a Wii with the Wii mote, Nun Chuck controller and a copy of Wii Sports.

The Wii has outsold the competition so far but sales of the console in recent weeks have dipped significantly and the PS3 is beginning to shift. Nintendo will be hoping to halt their slide with this latest move but even with a $100 difference in price the Wii is miles behind the PS3 in terms of functionality and raw power. Sony also announced recently that they will be releasing a motion sensitive controller which will bring Wii-like functionality to the PS3.
