Posted Wednesday, June 27th, 2007 by Alex Ion

Mitsubishi DiamondCrysta RDT241WMitsubishi won’t stay behind Dell when it comes to launching new LCD displays, and it looks like Dell is doing a really great job. But Mitsubishi is nowhere to be left aside, at least not the new DiamondCrysta RDT241W and RDT241W BK models.

Mitsubishi DiamondCrysta RDT241W BKThe two new monitors have some nice features like the 1900 x 1200 resolution, the 5ms response time and features color gamut covering 92 percent of the NTSC color space. The contrast ratio is 900:1 unlike Dell going out with 1000:1.

You get two choices of colors like those you see in the picture above: black and white. No words regarding prices so far.

Viewsonic launches new LCDs

Posted Thursday, June 21st, 2007 by Mihnea Boiangiu

Viewsonic LCDViewsonic was my first computer display around 13 years ago. I didn’t hear too much from them till now. But it seems the company is going very well and they have just launched three new LCDs.

The new models include the 26-inch N2635w, 32-inch N3235w and 37-inch N3735w. The street prices for those LCDs are $599, $699 and $899 respectively. The TVs will be sold through specialized distributors and resellers. To give you an opinion about the specs, I will tell you that the first one offers 800:1 contrast ratio and the other two 1,200:1. The 1,366 x 768 resolution and 8ms refresh time can satisfy your tastes, as the Viewsonic LCDs are budget solutions. For something more powerful just visit Samsung and take yourself a 70″ HDTV. The difference is in prices!

The world’s biggest HDTV - 110 inches

Posted Friday, June 8th, 2007 by Mihnea Boiangiu

JVC’s 110 inches HDTV is available now. It is the biggest HDTV in the world. When I say biggest, you need to think at its size, but also at its weight. The big monster has 728-pounds and 110″. Thus you should think for a new living.

110 inches HDTV

The TV features multiple inputs including HDMI, Component, D4, S-Video and a D-sub15 pin socket for your PC. It offers 1920 x 1080 resolution and 5000:1 contrast. The customers can order the JVC TV starting from July, but the delivery will be in October. Also they should consider the price which I could say it’s outstanding - $53,000.

NHK Super Hi-Vision Television

Posted Wednesday, May 30th, 2007 by Mihnea Boiangiu

What the hell is that?! Easy my friend, I will present you the future successor of HDTV. A Japanese company, called NHK, has demonstrate at the Science and Technical Research Laboratories, in Tokyo, that the Super Hi-Vision television is the future of today’s HDTV systems.

NHK Super Hi-Vision Sensor

NHK’s engineers have presented a prototype image sensor that can offer a Super Hi-Vision resolution of 7680 by 4320. This progress on Super Hi-Vision will produce the replacement of today’s HDTV devices. Also, NHK has presented a Super Hi-Vision camera that can capture a live monochrome video image at 7680×4320 resolution. A prototype Super Hi-Vision encoder can encode a 24-gbps video signal to a 128-mbps MPEG4 AVC stream in real time using 16 encoders in parallel.

All in all, I would say the progress is outstanding. We’ve just entered the HDTV era and NHK has developed the next generation television. But, hey, the science don’t stop!

World’s thinnest display from Sony

Posted Friday, May 25th, 2007 by Mihnea Boiangiu

Sony announced on their website the thinnest OLED display in the world. It is only o.3 millimetre thick and offers 16.7 million colours. The display presented by Sony is 2.5″ wide and gives 160 x 120 pixel resolution.

Sony OLED display

Sony’s display will be officially presented at an academic symposium in Long Beach, California, this week. The display has more colours than the competitors products - Samsung with 262k colours and Philips with 16k colours. On the other hand Sony’s OLED offers only 1000:1 contrast ratio compared to Samsung’s 10000:1 ratio. Anyway there are slight chances to see this kind of displays replacing the actual LCDs and plasmas. The problem is that the costs are higher to produce the OLEDs.

Safety Shield - Protecting Your TV

Posted Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007 by Alex Ion

Safety Shield Protector For TVs

I know myself with a bad temper, because it happened not once, but twice to break a chair watching UEFA Champions League when my local soccer team played. The chair got the pressure so that I don’t throw anything towards the TV. Imagine how I felt when I saw that they have TVs screen protectors for those expensive large plasmas or LCDs.

I am also thinking of those Nintendo Wii players that often lose the controllers and break screens worth thousands of dollars, they would be happy with the protector, too! It’s called the Safety Shield and the manufacturers assure us to get 98% of the light through, which is almost un-noticeable to the eye. It will also be a way of reducing the UV rays, cool.

The price is not yet disclosed by the Taiwanese manufacturer LCDArm, and it will be produced in configurations from 30-inch to 46-inch. I am politely asking these guys to make it available internationally much faster, because the new soccer season is about to start in a few months and I need it! - ALEX ION

Shipping a plasma/lcd : to use or not to use professionals?

Posted Monday, May 21st, 2007 by Alex Ion

How not to ship a plasma

I’ve been reading Geekologie and I was astonished. They have a set of pictures with a plasma or an lcd being delivered by professionals and there is nothing I can say, but the fact that I hope the package was insured.

Wonder if he had a personal vendetta with the plasma inside the cardboard and if he used what he had inside the van to smash it in small pieces! From I can see this is a Samsung but I am not sure about the model : LNR409D? What do you guys think? - ALEX ION

Retro style TV from Brionvega

Posted Thursday, May 3rd, 2007 by Mihnea Boiangiu

The concept TV, from Brionvega has a retro design. The Italian manufacturer Brionvega is well known for producing TV sets from the 50s. The styles remained retro, but the technology kept up with new trends.

Brionvega TV

The Alpha TV was designed by Daniele Pesaresi. The Brionvega TV could be produced in two colors - orange and black. It features a remote control and a built-in DVD. The shiny case has chrome accents aside, which I found very attractive. Obviously, the remote keeps the same theme.

If this device will be produced, I am nearly sure it will be a great success. The only matter would be the price. But what the hell, the retro lovers will get it no matter what. Great design indeed! - MIHNEA BOIANGIU

Sharp is developing advanced LCDs for cellphones

Posted Tuesday, April 17th, 2007 by Mihnea Boiangiu

SharpSharp announced today, that the company is developing advanced LCDs for the mobile phones. The aim is to obtain sharper moving images as the video streaming services are getting more and more used. The digital broadcasting and the new generation of mobiles are demanding finer images. Due to this, Sharp tries to produce new LCD panels able to compete with the organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays.

The OLED displays can cost three times more than the conventional LCD panels. Sharp said that the manufacturing costs for the new panels won’t be over 130 percents from the conventional ones. The new LCDs will have a response speed three times higher and biggest contrast ratios than the conventional panels used today.

Sharp is planning to ship the first advanced LCDs by the end of the year. The expected value of the sales is around 1 billion Yens up to March 2009. - MIHNEA BOIANGIU
