Olympus (mu) μ770SW shock resistant and water proof digital camera

Posted Sunday, February 18th, 2007 by Alex Ion

For the last few months Olympus got a habit to release pretty competitive digital cameras such as SP-550UZ the 18x optical zoom camera. Nothing bad about it, but I am, yet again, surprised of what the guys have came up with on the new Olympus μ770SW for the active photographers that need a shock, freeze and underwater proof camera. It can survive a 1.5 meters high fall on solid grounds and withstand 100kgf, can go 10m deep into the water and will take crystal clear photos with temperatures as low as (minus) -10 Celsius.

Olympus (mu) μ770SW

The camera is very smart when using underwater thanks to the hydraulic and pressure sensor that will warn you when you go break the 7m depth. However, though it looks like a military digital camera suited for Irak or other war zones, you should know that it has a very nice stylish design and the specifications of the new Olympus (mu) μ770SW are quite interesting: 7.1 Mpix sensor, 3x optical zoom, 18MB built-in memory, 2.5-inch LCD display, 3 ashperical lens, 1 ED lens, high resolution of 3072×2304, xD card, possibility to record small clips with sound with 640×480 resolutions, connectivity via USB and Windows Vista compatibility. The camera comes with a Li-Ion battery and I should tell you that you can buy some upgrades to it to make it go 40m down into the water, leather camera cases and so on.

Olympus (mu) μ770SW weights only 155grams and the dimensions are 91.8 x 59.2 x 20.6mm. They don’t have price set, it’s still open for the release date that will be in March. Keep an eye on it on Olympus.

Olympus SP-550UZ new digital camera with 18x optical zoom

Posted Friday, February 16th, 2007 by Alex Ion

Olympus is pushing the borders of optical zoom. When you read the specifications of the new Olympus SP-550UZ you may think that the 18x is not optical zoom, but digital zoom. Well you’re wrong! The new CAMEDIA SP-550UZ beats the 10x optical zoom border, with a 7.1megapixel sensor, 5.6x digital zoom that combined with the optical zoom will take you to 100x.
Olympus SP-550UZ comes with approx 21MB internal memory and it supports xD memory cards. The camera supports RAW and JPEG file formats with resolutions up to 3072 x 2304 and can also record movies in VGA 640 x 480 or 320 x 240 at 30fps/15fps. You can also connect it to your PC, very easy via the USB port supported by Windows Vista/XP. Olympus CAMEDIA SP-550UZ comes with 2 ED lens and 4 aspherical lens, a 2.5-inch TFT display, weights 365grams and the size is 116×78.5×78mm. Release date is set for March 2007, and the price is still open, making me think that it will be around US$700 and you can take a look under the pictures for some quotes. Check it up on Olympus.

Olympus FE-250 is a 8 megapixel camera and the first model from FE series that feature BrightCapture Technology. This technology used by Olympus helps you to get clear pictures by night. The camera has a 6.4 cm LCD for better viewing. It also features a xD card slot to expand its memory up to 2GB. Olympus FE-250 offers a 3x optical zoom. That could be better…

Olympus FE-250

Using the principle “one button, one function” the camera has a choice of 15 scene modes, as well as video recording with sound. Olympus FE-250 includes Image Stabilization program which will help you to get rid of blurry photos. The camera will be available from February and it should cost no more than $400.
