How To Fix The Xbox 360 Red Ring Of Death

Posted Thursday, December 24th, 2009 by vernons

Figure 1: Three flashing lights on the Ring of Light

You might have been lucky to have bought an Xbox 360 and not have had the unfortunate “red ring of death”. I have inserted a picture above of what the red ring of death actually looks like and it occurs mainly because of over heating. It’s estimated that 33% of all Xbox’s will suffer from this defect in the product.

There are a number of different alternatives available to owners, if you are able to do without your Xbox for a couple of weeks you can send it back to Microsoft and have it replaced. There is another alternative that a lot of hard core gamers will pursue and that’s one of purchasing a red ring of death repair kit.  The red ring of death fix for the non-techie shouldn’t really be risked :)

acer aspire revo

This is an attractive and compact PC which comes in black or white. It is powered by a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom 230 processor, it has 1 GB of RAM and a 160 GB hard drive. It is designed as a space saving desktop for basic everyday use and it will serve you well for internet browsing, watching movies, listening to music and document or photo editing. It is not suitable for gamers as it has integrated Nvidia Ion graphics and lacks the necessary processing power for recent releases.

The connectivity is good with a multi-in-1 memory card reader, 6 USB 2.0 ports, 1 VGA port and an HDMI port. It comes with Windows XP installed and a USB keyboard and mouse are provided. This could serve well as an HTPC with a slight upgrade and you can always get an external DVD or Blu-ray drive because it lacks both. However considering the price tag of just $199.99 it’s no surprise to find these selling extremely well.

vizio19

Vizio have dubbed this 19 inch HDTV an Eco product because it exceeds Energy Star guidelines by at least 15% below Energy Star 3.0. This means it has comparatively low power usage. It supports 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i but doesn’t quite go all the way up to 1080p although it is very unlikely you’ll notice on a screen this size. It has a contrast ratio of 5,000:1 with a viewing angle of 170 degrees. It also has built in ATSC, NTSC and QAM TV tuners for picking up broadcast TV.

This looks like an ideal set for a kitchen or small bedroom and the connection options make it quite versatile. There are 2 HDMI inputs, component, RGB and RF inputs and a headphone jack. It comes with a stand and a full function remote control (batteries included). For the knock down price of $198.12 you can order this from Amazon and it represents great value for money considering the picture quality.

BenQ W6000 DLP Projector

benq-w6000

Before flat panel screens were produced in giant sizes your only choice for a cinema style home theater feel was a projector. With the advent of high definition projectors are less popular as home theater solutions and this is partly because you have to pay big prices to get devices which support the latest resolutions. This projector supports full 1080p and 24 frames per second for a true cinema style experience. It runs at 2,500 Ansi Lumens brightness and has a contrast ratio of 50,000:1 so the picture is clear even in a room with ambient lighting.

The device features HQV processing which is also capable of upscaling standard definition footage to 1080p. The maximum image size is massive (25 feet) and this projector will give you a real home cinema feel. It is large and quite heavy so you’ll need to think about where to mount it. It can connect to inputs via HDMI. It will cost you $1,999.99 at Amazon which is a good price for this level of quality.

Google Phone Rumours Won’t Die

With the Android operating system taking off in a number of new smart phone releases the idea that are going to release their own branded mobile phone just won’t go away. Endgadget just printed exclusive pictures of the Nexus One which they claim could be a new phone because it lacks any HTC logo, or any other company for that matter, and it is running Android 2.0.1. It looks sleek and attractive with a large touchscreen and it is running on T-Mobile and using Wi-Fi.

There’s still no official word from although they have denied plans for their own mobile phone in the past. It seems likely that a branded phone would be very popular indeed and it will almost certainly support all of the latest developments. The Nexus One has Navigation and Goggles which is a kind of visual search function. Whether it is the long awaited phone we’ll just have to wait and see but the rumour certainly isn’t going away.
