Brando’s telescope for the iPhone

Posted Monday, August 18th, 2008 by Alex Ion

There are times when you don’t have your high class DSLR with you, but only your telephone, and you need to zoom in more to get a clear shot of something stunning, amazing, incredible, etc. What do you do? Until now, there were not many solutions, but Brando found the niche and is now exploiting it. Their new add-on telescope was designed for the 3G iPhone, and other than looking incredible weird it’s going to improve things 6 times (zoom I mean).

My honest opinion? I don’t think the pictures are that good so you’d better go for a pocket camera to keep it in the other pocket of your jeans next to your iPhone if you plan to sneak on someone. Brando’s iPhone Telescope is going to cost $19 if you don’t!

Garmin’s Waterproof Nuvi 500 Review

Posted Sunday, August 17th, 2008 by Alex Ion

It’s been a while since our reviews and this time we got the newly announced Garmin Nuvi 500 for a spin. What’s so special about it? It’s waterproof. With road maps and topographic maps for the lower 48 US states, Hawaii and Puerto Rico the new Nuvi 500 is set to get you from point A to point B either on a bicycle, car, boat or when walking.

What can you expect from it? To perform just as good as any other Garming navigator that is going to show you everything on the 3.5-inch removable touchscreen (320 x 242 pixels). We also loved the part that it didn’t have any moving parts. Which means it won’t break that easy, unless you put your hammer on it or smash it to the ground for a particular reason. The windshield suction cup also did a great job in keeping the new Nuvi 500 in its place.

Other than the great specs, it also has two drawbacks. The added bulk / weight and the omission of text-to-speech. If the first one is not that big unless you have to walk your way out, no text-to-speech is really something we’d appreciate on the upgraded version.

So guys, if you plan to spend $399 for the new Garmin Nuvi 500, we can tell you it’s a good device to get your hopes into. Just make sure you check other GPS navigators, too, before you buy, and see what fits your needs the best.

Crystal USB Desktop Speakers, Amazing Looks

Posted Friday, August 15th, 2008 by Alex Ion

I’m not really sure if you are going to need a couple of crystal USB desktop speakers, but I’m going to mention them anyway. Why, you may ask? Because of the looks.

These crystal designed speakers can be connected to your PC or laptop via USB 2.0 and should output (only) 1 watt per channel even though, the producer considers them as “audiophile” grade. Talking about the producer, it’s not a big company or anything but even if it doesn’t sound THAT good we’ll take the looks for a $39.99 price.

Too bad we can’t get more specs from the manufacturer, except the “these are amazing speakers” line.

MacBook Air with Penryn, Soon Soon

Posted Thursday, August 14th, 2008 by Alex Ion

I’m pretty sure over here, that Apple fans are waiting on the big announcement that the MacBook Air is getting Penryn help under the hood. Apparently the company is going to ditch the 65-nm Intel processor special made for them and will go for the “standard” 45nm chips that should run from 2.26 GHz to 3.06 GHz with 1,066 MHz FSB.

Eco-geeks may not love the new models, because it has an increased power consumption. From 20 W to 29 W. Since this is just a rumor right now, I can only add that Intel is going release a few low and ultra-low voltage Penryns in a 22-mm package which will draw less power.

The info, which is from PhoneNews, really makes sense. We demand MBAs with Penryns. But what if we need some better batteries and better GMA X4500 integrated graphics? Can you Apple?

ScanSnap S300 portable ADF scanner from Fujitsu

Posted Wednesday, August 13th, 2008 by Alex Ion

There’s a new portable scanning solution from Fujitsu. Dubbed ScanSnap S300, it’s supposedly the “world’s smallest color ADF (automatic document feeder) scanner” that only measures 11.2 x 3.7 x 3.0 inches and weighs 3.1 lbs, fitting nicely in a laptop bag or a briefcase.

It’s definitely intended to business professionals that need a solution when traveling or on-the-go.

The new ScanSnap S300 is also has the fastest “one-touch” conversion (from paper into searchable PDF files) doing 8 pages per minute if it’s single-sided pages or 17 images per minute for double-sided documents.

Other than that, the special scanning options include business cards, some page-detection options and the fact that it’s capable of doing 600dpi scans.

It works on AC, but also via USB which is supposedly scanning at half speed (which isn’t bad at all).

The MSRP price after launch (last November) was $300, but you can find it online for cheaper. Amazon for example, has it up for sale at $260. My suggestion is to read a couple of photo scanner reviews if you really want to get yours.
