Inforad v4e - A Radar Detector with GPS

Posted Monday, November 12th, 2007 by Mihnea Boiangiu

In some countries the radar detectors are allowed, so many drivers try to escape from cameras and speed radars with the most advanced devices. A French producer called Inforad has released recently its new radar detector that features a GPS module. With so many fixed radars and speed cameras, the GPS will save you from trouble.

Inforad v4e

The Inforad v4e features a SiRF Star III GPS receiver chip a standard higher than its v3 predecessor. Furthermore a new firmware will reduce the number of false alarms. Inforad provides a battery kit that lasts around 10 hours in case the car charger is occupied. The bad news is the kit doesn’t come in the package.

The Inforad v4e radar detector retails for €99 and has a 2-year warranty. Also the software updates are free for the product’s lifetime.

Posted Saturday, November 10th, 2007 by Mihnea Boiangiu

Today iPhone has landed in Europe, more exactly in UK and in Germany. Although many fans have come for the big launch, Europeans were not so enthusiast as Americans. Some shoppers formed cues in front of the retail stores. By 5 p.m., Deutsche Telekom AG, which owns T-Mobile, announced they sold more than 10,000 iPhones in Germany. The British carrier O2, doesn’t want to disclose the exact number of the sales for this Friday.

Even the iPhone has been expected for six months, there were complains about its price. For instance in Germany the 8GB version retails for $587, on top of a contract through T-Mobile starting at $72 a month and a $37 “installation” fee. In UK, the same model costs $566, while in US it retails for $399.

In France, the gadget-phone will be released on November 29. Orange will be the retailer for the iPhone. There are no news about launching in the other countries across Europe.

Posted Thursday, November 8th, 2007 by Mihnea Boiangiu

After we delivered you the news about the SpyDisk Pen, now is time for a new pen gadget. As the matter of fact, this one won’t be seen in stores for the Christmas because it’s only a concept.

Pen Phone Concept

However, Gizmodo informs us that the Pen Phone concept will be developed by an anonymous manufacturer. The phone uses Bluetooth ear buds for voice calls. It features a little display, the dialing numbers, a microSD card slot and seems to support USB connection. The project looks very promising and I would love to hold one in my palm.

Posted Tuesday, November 6th, 2007 by Alex Ion

Lately, we’ve seen more and more cellphones being launched in Europe before the States or other countries and that’s the case with LG’s newest smartphone addition, KS20. With Prada perfume and Voyager memories the design is highly appreciated, but let’s see some specs.

LG KS20 Smartphone

3.6Mbps HSDPA, 2 megapixel camera, 2.8-inch QVGA 240×320 dispay and Wi-Fi b and g, all these running on Windows Mobile 6, I guess I got your attention already. But I won’t stop here, because LG just packed a lot inside. How about a full Internet browser, built-in Bluetooth, 128MB of internal memory and the 1050 mAh battery that lasts 400 hours in stand-by mode and 4 hours of talking.

How does that sound? The new LG KS20 will be available in France, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy and Deutschland stores, right away so I’m jealous I can’t have it where I live.

Cellphones Reduced to Silence by the Illegal Jammers

Posted Tuesday, November 6th, 2007 by Mihnea Boiangiu

When I read the story I felt very well about this practice even it is not legal. For many times when I was in a movie theater, I had been disturbed by some stupid guys that were talking at their cellphones. Did this happen to you too? In this case I agree with these phone jammers.

Cellphone jammer

The device emits strong radio waves that interfere with cell phone antennas cutting the signal. Consequently the noisy talker will stare at a blank display showing the “No Signal” message. So, the gadget turns off any cellphone in a 30-foot range. However its use is illegal, but more jammers get in US everyday.

The fine for using such a device is $11,000. Nevertheless, many owners of cafes and hair salons, hoteliers, public speakers, theater operators, bus drivers and, increasingly, commuters on public transportation use them to reduce to silence the noisy chatterers. It costs from $50 to several hundred dollars.

The jammer can be useful in schools during the classes or in prisons. I also agree their use in theaters or libraries. But those illegal devices could do harm too. Think about criminals using them to jam the signal of their victims. The problem won’t be solved too easy as I see it.

The Latest Geek Stuff - The Wi-Fi T-shirt Detector

Posted Tuesday, November 6th, 2007 by Mihnea Boiangiu

The ultimate geek stuff I discovered is the Wi-Fi T-shirt detector. It detects signal strength for 802.11b and 802.11g networks. The Wi-Fi Detector T-shirt is 100% cotton and features a removable decal that contains the Wi-Fi display. When you get nearby a hotspot the T-shirt will display a glowing animation.

Wi-Fi T-shirt

As I see it this “gadget” could be an uniform for desperate geeks who can’t stay out of a network. The high-tech fashionable T-shirt works on three AAA batteries that go into a battery pack hidden inside a little pocket. This T-shirt priced at $29.99 can be purchased from ThinkGeek.

Antique Laptop Design by Steampunk Artist

Posted Monday, November 5th, 2007 by Mihnea Boiangiu

How does this sounds to you? Antique laptop? Yes, is true. Some guy has transformed a Hewlett-Packard ZT1000 laptop into a collection item. He is one of the artist of the Steampunk subculture. Steampunk represents a new do-it-yourself garage-hacker trend to redesign modern gadgets using the technology and the aesthetics of the Victorian Era. Richard Nagy has create a mahogany-stained pine case with leather wrist rests tacked beneath its copper keys and sits on brass feet.

Its case was decorated with clockwork gears. There was hard work and many time spent on eBay for getting all the parts. But finally the result was amazing. Richard Nagy has created a masterpiece.

The laptop turns on with an antique clock-winding key by way of a custom-built ratcheting switch made from old clock parts.

USB Far Infra-Red Pad for Tired Geeks

Posted Monday, November 5th, 2007 by Mihnea Boiangiu

Have you ever felt pain in your wrist when using the computer? I am sure about that. Every time I spend more than five hours in front of my computer I feel tired and sometimes my wrists hurt. To solve this problem a guy invented the USB powered pad for pain relief.

USB Far Infra-Red Pad

Yes, I am not mocking up here. This gadget uses the infrared light to relief tiredness, muscle strain or even pain. In fact it warms your wrist or muscle creating a relaxing sensation. You will feel something warm up to 40°C ~ 45°C, its manufacturer says. Nevertheless, the device should be used only after a doctor’s agreement. Its users must be careful because the effect can turn bad if the USB Far Infra-Red Pad is used more than 15 minutes.

This gadget has a fan already in my person. It isn’t too pricey (only $21.99) and seems very useful. I would try it right away.
