The Violent Game ‘Manhunt 2′ Still Banned in United Kingdom

Posted Monday, October 8th, 2007 by Mihnea Boiangiu

I don’t know if you have ever played this game, but I’ve seen scenes from it. In fact, that was the first version, played by a friend of mine. I am telling you this game should not reach people under 18. It is extremely violent and can provoke psychological traumas.

The news about ‘Manhunt 2′ being banned have come today when British regulators didn’t accept the revised version of the game motivating the changes didn’t go far enough to alter the game’s “bleakness and callousness of tone.”

“The impact of the revisions on the bleakness and callousness of tone, or the essential nature of the game play, is clearly insufficient,” explained British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) director David Cooke.

Manhunt 2

Manhunt 2 had been set for release in June, but Take Two Interactive Inc. suspended plans to distribute the game after it was rejected in US and Europe. After two months of changes, the game was accepted by the rating board for US release. It received Mature rating indeed. It will be available this Halloween for PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable and Nintendo Wii.

However ‘Manhunt 2′ remains banned in UK due to BBFC requests to eliminate the violent and horror scenes. Take-Two and Rockstar Games agreed to resubmit a further edited version of the game.

Samsung YP-P2 Available in Korea

Samsung YP-P2

The newest DAP-PMP from Samsung has been released in Korea. The wonderful player has been launched in three versions: 2GB priced at 199000Won (or 154Euros), 4GB at 239000Won (or 185Euros) and 8GB which costs no less than 289000Won (or 224Euros). All I could say it that Samsung YP-P2 looks very good. Neither the specs are not so bad: 3″ touchscreen, Bluetooth, FM radio and DNSE (Digital Natural Sound Engine). All those packed in a 9.9 millimeters thick case. My only concern is the price, which seem a little higher for this product.

NTT DoCoMO Unveils Prototype Phone That Monitors Your Health

Posted Monday, October 8th, 2007 by Alex Ion

NTT DoCoMo Wellness Phone

With so many mobile phones launched each day it’s hard to keep track of them and remember what each of them feature, but that’s not the case with NTT DoCoMo’s (NYSE:DCM) latest phone that is apparently able to monitor your health functions just like a smart treadmill.

The wellness phone could be quite useful because thanks to a motion sensor inside, it knows if you’re resting, running or climbing, can calculate if and how many calories you’ve burnt, takes your pulse and tells your body fat. There are two more things this little gadget could to for you: breath analyzer and stress analyzer. Blow into it and it will tell you a few things about your breathing, or answer a few questions and it will tell you if you’re stressed out or not.

The wellness phone from NTT DoCoMo is still in developing phase because they have a lot of testing to do before they release it to the market and also want to add a few key features like calorie intake and ability to track meals. Sounds like a winner to me because I can’t wait to be more disciplined with eating and sports.

ETEN’s Glowfish M800 is a SMARTphone!

Posted Monday, October 8th, 2007 by Alex Ion

Eten Glowfish M800Fellow gadgeters from PocketInfo.nl in the Netherlands, got some interesting facts about the new ETEN Glowfish M800 which is supposed to upgrade the one we already know, Glowfish X800. Though the term smartphone is pretty generic I am talking about a really SMARTphone, because from the specs I’ve seen it’s quite a champion.

Let’s get into some details. Your applications will work thanks to a 500MHz Samsung processor, on Windows Mobile 6 Professional. With 256MB ROM, HSDPA/UMTS and 2 cameras, I am sure many so called smartphones can hear Eten’s Glowfish M800 breath. And did I mention the SiRFstar III GPS chip or the 1530 mAh battery?

Comparable with HTC’s TyTN II but with a better battery and a VGA display, Glowfish M800 will sell for 600-630 euros (that’s $850 - $890) starting from November 2007.

24-carat gold MacBook Pro and a diamond Apple logo

If you ever imagined a MacBook Pro made out of gold, Computer Choppers has it. I wonder what will all those Apple fanatics will think about this one, because not many will afford to, at least, touch it. In fact this is an old MacBook Pro that has been modified and covered in 24-carat gold along with a big diamond Apple logo.

Don’t expect it to go into mass production because these guys mentioned they are only doing unique laptop customization. Still this new 24kt Gold MacBook Pro is a beauty and I might get in touch with them to get my Acer, some wheels.

Apple anti-Caps-Lock Campaign on Their New Keyboards?

Apple anti-Caps-Lock Campaign on Their New Keyboards?

Yesterday I’ve heard some nice Apple news, from Jonathan Rentzsch, that said the new metallic keyboards (he bought one) have something against Caps Lock. The first thing that came into my mind was that this would be a manufacturing problem so I started to read about it and I found out that lots of people have the same problem.

To make it clear, the new Apple keyboards are taking ages and require a good bear press on the button to turn Caps Lock on, and will only need a you blow air upon it, to turn off. The matter was confirmed by so many other consumers so that brought me to the idea of an anti-Caps-Lock campaign that Steve Jobs is doing. I wonder if people scream at the office!
I am not saying that Caps Lock is a good thing, but if you think that you get to pay $47 for the wired version of the keyboard, and $79 for the wireless, wouldn’t you want all your keys to work perfectly?

Extra USB Security

Posted Friday, October 5th, 2007 by Mihnea Boiangiu

For those who don’t trust the security softwares has appeared a solution to protect their computers against USB transmitted malware. It is called the USB Security Lock and it is a physical device that actually locks your USB ports. Besides protecting the computer for viruses, it prevents illegal access to confidential information.

USB Security Lock

The USB Security Lock works very simple. It places a blocker inside the USB port. The blocker prevents access to the USB port by any way. It can be removed only using the Security Lock device. Available for $9.9, the USB Security Lock can be purchased here.

BT Plans to Create the Largest Wi-Fi Network in the World

Posted Friday, October 5th, 2007 by Mihnea Boiangiu

BT Group, formerly British Telecommunications, plans to persuade its British customers to turn their home wireless “hubs” into public hotspots. Succeeding in this plan, BT will be able to compete with the mobile phones operators to deliver Internet services on the go.

BT Group

There are around 10,000 to 11,000 hotspots in the country. Increasing the number for a nation-wide network would boost the sales for BT’s Fusion phone that supports fixed-line telephony, mobile networks and of course supports wireless connections. For the customers will be great benefits as they will make cheaper calls over the Wi-Fi connection. Also, BT’s Broadband costumers who would participate at the project will have free access to the network across the country.

“It won’t take over overnight, but over time wi-fi will chip away at the mobile network,” said Gavin Patterson, BT’s managing director for consumer operations.

Already important investors like Google and Skype expressed their intention to collaborate for the project. Although BT’s plan seems very good, I tend to think it will be developed only in the big cities, at least in the next five years. First of all, not everybody will share the connection (security issues, connection speed problems etc.). Secondly, the costs to maintain such an infrastructure are too big. I am not a pessimist, but I am a little reserved about its success.

Ceatec: Toshiba prepares to launch HD DVD recorders

Posted Friday, October 5th, 2007 by Mihnea Boiangiu

During the Ceatec show in Japan, Toshiba plans to launch three HD DVD recorders. All three are able to transcode in real-time an off-the-air MPEG2 high-definition signal into the MPEG4 AVC compression system which is more efficient. That means the recorded content will be stored in less space than usual, so a single layer HD DVD-R disc will contain about 6 hours of content, Toshiba says. Thus, it seems it is possible to store about 2 hours of content on a DVD-R using the recently standardized HD REC format.

The three models are: the high-end RD-X7 recorder, the RD-A101 and RD-A201. The first features 1080p video output at 24 frames per second. About the other two, Toshiba didn’t make available specs information.

The HD DVD recorders will be released in the forthcoming weeks due to the serried competition with the Blu-ray recorders produced by Sony, Panasonic and Sharp.

Computer Pillow to Stop You From Snoring

Posted Thursday, October 4th, 2007 by Alex Ion

Anti Snoring PillowWith so many men or women snoring, there’s a reason why there are so many inventions released to help you stop. Anti-snoring pillows solutions have been on the market for some time now, but it looks like Daryoush Bazargani, professor of computer science at the University of Rostock, developed an improved version of it.

We’re talking of a pillow attached to a computer the size of a book that records noise levels and which is smart to change your head position during sleep until you stop snoring. Snoring is a result of an abnormal nasal airflow which the pillow promises to change by modifying the air compartments inside. The prototype was presented in Germany but professor Bazargani didn’t mention if it’s going into mass production or when.

I do have one question though, what will happen to a serious snoring case, would they need chiropractor help the next day, with all that moving?
