Posted Monday, July 16th, 2007 by Alex Ion

USB Can Cooler and Warmer

Just a few months after we presented you the USB mini refrigerator for the hot summers, it looks like we already have Brando with another one popping out. It’s a can cooler and chiller that you can take at your office to keep your beverages (cans only) cool while you’re on a meeting with a very important client.

The mini fridge gadget has a built-in mini fan, is powered by USB and is Plug and Play. It has a button to choose from chill or warm, weights 460g and the dimensions are 14 x 11 x 13 cm. The price is $32, so this new gadget for the lazy, is really affordable but what interests me more is if anyone would really get one!

Ricoh Caplio RR750 - entry level to point-and-shoot

It all started with Ricoh Caplio RR730 that got now some small upgrades. Higher resolution 2.5-inch TFT-LCD screen and better lens resolution for better picture quality. Ricoh RR750 which is in fact an entry level digital camera, has a 7.16 megapixel CCD sensor, 4x digital zoom and 3x optical zoom.

Ricoh Caplio RR750 comes with a 32MB built-in memory, USB connectivity and one SD expansion slot. Working on two AA batteries, weighting 128g and with a combined zoom of 12x you can consider it a good solution for a point-and-shoot partner for photography on the go. Ricoh RR750 was only announced in Japan so far, with no release date or price.

Intel Extreme Mobile CPU “for the win”

Posted Monday, July 16th, 2007 by Alex Ion

Intel Core 2 Extreme X7800 OverclockingGreat news for laptop users with the launch of the new high-end Intel Core 2 Extreme X7800 processor. It’s the first laptop CPU in the Extreme Edition brand to bring a lot of goods in one small and expensive chip. It runs at 2.6GHz with a 4MB L2 cache and an 800MHz front-side bus.

I know many will think of it as the perfect tunning processor and I say the same, because Intel just took the over-speed protection off. This is just like an invitation to overclock the X7800, but keep in mind that you’re the only one responsible if anything bad happens. Apart the 28% speed boost above the Core Duo T2600, Intel Core 2 Extreme X7800 has two new appreciated features: Enhanced Deep Sleep, consuming less power when the system is idle, and Advanced Media Boost so that you can edit your videos, images or music faster and better. The price is really steep, $851.

Prepare your dollars, because in about two weeks we get to see Core 2 Extreme X7800 processors live. I suspect it won’t be better than a Core 2 Duo ($300 cheaper) and I wonder if it’s going to be a MacBook Pros we’ll see it in!

Canon builds $451 mln factory to produce image sensors

Posted Monday, July 16th, 2007 by Alex Ion

Canon builds $451 mln factory to produce image sensorsCanon, the biggest digital camera maker, announced they’ve started working on a new factory to produce complementary metal oxide semiconductors (CMOS sensors) in May and is located near Tokyo in the Kanagawa Prefecture.

Once alive and kicking, the company will almost double the production capacity from 3 mln chips they are manufacturing right now in another factory in Kanagawa, that will be used both in SLR (single lens reflex) cameras as well as compact models. Canon is trying to have their key components, manufactured in-house, to lower costs and to become less dependent of Sony’s CMOS. Their targets for 2007 are 24 million digital cameras, out of which, 3 million are high-end SLRs.

Canon will invest 55 billion yen in this new factory ($451 mln) and should become operational in July 2008.

After Taiwan, The City of Seville Going For LED Traffic Lights

Posted Monday, July 16th, 2007 by Alex Ion

About two weeks ago Taiwan decided to replace the halogen traffic lights with LED units for the sake of the planet by reducing power consumption. It looks like the city of Seville (Spain) announced the same and that is because LEDs have a power output of 6 to 15W instead of those incandescent bulbs going for 35 to 70W.

These actions will save somewhere near 85% of the traffic light electricity (~ 4 million KWh) that will reduce CO2 emissions in 4,000 tons. Another reason to do it is an increased life span, because LEDs are much better. Another green project in the city of Seville is a light tram/train system that will cut down the costs of transportation.
