Sony PSP to use the Wi-Fi telefony

Posted Monday, May 28th, 2007 by Mihnea Boiangiu

The PlayStation Portable (PSP) will be able to support Wi-Fi telefony. The news says that British Telecommunications PLC (BT) is developing a software-based Internet telephony for PSP. In addition, PSP’s users will enjoy the internet voice and video calls from their devices.

Sony PSP

The service will be provided for Europe and possibly Middle East, Africa and Oceania. BT will get the full support of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Ltd. However, the service could not be functional in Americas or in Asia, because BT and not Sony supports the development.

To perform the voice and video calls, the PSP will need a camera. It already comes with built-in Wi-Fi adapter. PSP doesn’t meet the sales expectations for this year. Thus, Sony is trying to make it more attractive for the markets.

World’s thinnest display from Sony

Posted Friday, May 25th, 2007 by Mihnea Boiangiu

Sony announced on their website the thinnest OLED display in the world. It is only o.3 millimetre thick and offers 16.7 million colours. The display presented by Sony is 2.5″ wide and gives 160 x 120 pixel resolution.

Sony OLED display

Sony’s display will be officially presented at an academic symposium in Long Beach, California, this week. The display has more colours than the competitors products - Samsung with 262k colours and Philips with 16k colours. On the other hand Sony’s OLED offers only 1000:1 contrast ratio compared to Samsung’s 10000:1 ratio. Anyway there are slight chances to see this kind of displays replacing the actual LCDs and plasmas. The problem is that the costs are higher to produce the OLEDs.

3 Year Old Breaks a Plasma After Losing at Wii Sports

Posted Friday, May 25th, 2007 by Alex Ion

To the right, Adam McConnell, three years old. To the left, a broken 42-inch plasma. The joy of breaking the TV after losing at Wii sports, priceless.

Adam McConnell smashes plasma after losing Wii Sport

This is a real case. 3 year old Adam, smashed his father’s plasma while his dad went to the kitchen to get him something to drink. It should be really fun to hear “two big bangs”. Why he did this? Because he lost a tennis game playing Wii Sports. It wasn’t a slipping Wiimote so no reason for a lawsuit here, just the boy’s rage.

Now that really makes me think what was the little boy drinking? Maybe whiskey in the morning and some vodka in the evening? He’s now banned from playing Wii, for two weeks.

“I left him playing the tennis game and went to the kitchen to get him a drink. Then I heard two big bangs. When I ran back in Adam was using the handset to smash the TV screen. It was a 42in plasma screen which cost around £1,000 - the whole front is wrecked.

I think he lost a game and he just cracked up. I went out to the table and put my head in my hands, while I thought about how I could explain to a three- and-a-half year old what he had done wrong. I ended up asking him how he’d feel if I broke his Spiderman.

He is so independent and he already has a real competitive streak, but I didn’t realize he would lose his temper like that. He could be the next John McEnroe - he had a great swing.”

12 Volt Car Adapter Turns Into Smart AC and USB Inverter : review

Posted Friday, May 25th, 2007 by Alex Ion

This is a weird invention we got our eyes on. This is a 12-volt adapter that will turn into an air conditioning gadget or will power USB devices when you put it in the lighter slot. The power is supposed to be up to 120 Watts. Impressive!

Gizmodo had their hands on it, and used it for charging a Sony Ericsson mobile phone and the MacBook Pro powerbrick, separately. They phone didn’t charge when the laptop was in the adapter, so they charged it from the notebook. I think this new device should be used while driving your car and stuff like that because I am not sure if you car battery will be able to support what you charge. Even the manual says for every 3 hours of use, to start the engine for 20 minutes. The price is $40 and my conclusion is that it’s well deserved. - ALEX ION

Cavity Watch from Seiko

Posted Friday, May 25th, 2007 by Mihnea Boiangiu

I found this new very interesting. Seiko has launched a collection of watches called Cavity. Obviously the watch was called so because of its design. The Seiko designers have found an ingenious design. It looks like a molar tooth with a big cavity inside. The cavity is in fact the screen.

Cavity Watch from Seiko

The Cavity Watch is produced in two variants: gold and silver. The straps reminds of a sweet chocolate. But hey, you have a cavity! The watch is available for now in Japanese stores. It costs 16,800 yen (£70/$140).

Motorola RIZR Z6tv Leaked On The FCC Website

Posted Thursday, May 24th, 2007 by Alex Ion

Motorola RIZR Z6tv VerizonThe FCC website is a very good source for news that have not yet been divulged to the public. It’s the case of the new Motorola RIZR Z6tv that we saw pictures of. You need to understand that this has not yet been announced by Motorola so what you see here is something they kept in the dark so far.

From a quick view on the FCC site I can tell you it has microSD card slot and Bluetooth 2.0, a 2-inch (?) QVGA display and a 2 megapixel camera. Something different to the new Motorola RIZR Z6tv is the VCAST Mobile TV feature and the 2.5mm headset jack. Not bad!

I think it’s going to be announced for Verizon Wireless, later this year. - ALEX ION

300 MBps on WiFi from NEC Aterm WR8400N

Posted Thursday, May 24th, 2007 by Alex Ion

NEC Aterm WR8400N wireless router

NEC Aterm WR8400N the four port WiFi router and the Aterm WL300NC PCMCIA card promise to deliver a theoretically maximum speed of 300 MBps, which for our actual standards is pretty big. Looks like Nec is ready to push the limits further, of the
802.11n technology. However to get to 300MBps you need to equip yourself with a network adapter, PC or laptop that is compatible with the same wireless standard.
Engadget also said that if we talk theory, both the Aterm WR8400N router and the WL300NC PCMCIA card are compatible with 802.11 a/b/g devices, support WEP/WPA protocols and connects on bands from 2.4GHz to 5GHz.

Still, there is room for development, and since Nec has no release date and no price so far, many alternatives (probably from China - cheap?) will pop out. - ALEX ION
