IEEE 802.16m 1GB wireless speeds compatible with WiMAX and 4G

Posted Sunday, February 25th, 2007 by Alex Ion

There is a draft from IEEE about the 802.16.m standard which promises to deliver in one or two years, wireless speeds of up to 1GB. The 802.16m 1GB speed is based on the MIMO technology (multiple-input / multiple-output) which is already used on certain 802.11g/n routers. For example the 54Mbps routers are capable o theoretical speeds of 108Mbps by using MIMO.

IEEE 802.16m will not be a part of the WiMAX standard but the Committee assures us of compatibilities between these two standards. It will also be 4G compatible with the future wireless networks offering much higher speeds. These things will only happen in a couple of years from now on, when the CDMA2000 or the current WCDMA will be long history being replaced by OFDMA.

Current 802.16m specifications include:

  • Very low rate Data: = 16 kbps
  • Low rate Data & Low Multimedia: = 144 kbps
  • Medium multimedia: = 2 Mbps
  • High multimedia: = 30 Mbps
  • Super high multimedia: 30 Mbps ~ 100 Mbps / 1 Gbps

However there is a small thing that should be taken into consideration. The IEEE Committee announces that the military will help into developing the new IEEE 802.16m standard for higher transfer speeds on mobile devices, so this means it may not be released right away on the market but will be first tested by the military. Nice one!

LG Prada Bluetooth headset and you’re trendy

Posted Friday, February 23rd, 2007 by Alex Ion

LG Prada Bluetooth headset and you're trendyHow many of you are aware that when you buy clothes or accessories you’re not really buying top-notch technology or extremely good looks but you buy a brand, and many times that’s what makes a difference when you see the price. Prada is on a trend of launching accessories for the well known stylish LG Prada. Looks like they did a great job into partnering with LG since they will gain better exposure.

The LG Prada Bluetooth headset is (they call it) specially designed for your LG Prada mobile phone, it’s nothing fancy or kewl about it, but has the PRADA trademarked over there. When going out you don’t dress like a peacock but you match your outfit, and this is what these guys are thinking. Match your phone with the Bluetooth headset. It has a small display that you would never see it while wearing it, but I tell you that it indicates the battery life.

If you ask me I am not impressed at all, not even if it has the Prada logo over there. Release date is set for May and meanwhile we are waiting for a price, because they don’t have one yet. Read more on PradaPhoneByLG and ShinyShiny.

Ultimate wireless technology from Apple

Posted Friday, February 23rd, 2007 by Mihnea Boiangiu

In the last year Apple has developed the next generation wireless technology 802.11n. The new wireless technology delivers greater performance, more range, and improved reliability. In comparison with older wireless standards like 802.11g or 802.11b, the Apple’s 802.11n adds a technology called multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), a signal processing and smart antenna technique for transmitting multiple data streams through multiple antennas. The result is up to five times transfer speeds and up to twice the range compared to the earlier 802.11g standard.

The new AirPort Extreme Base Station is using the 802.11n wireless standard. The AirPort Extreme Base Station is compatible with older standards 802.11a/b/g and it has built-in firewall and three Ethernet ports. The device is priced at $179.

Toshiba unveiled at 3GSM Congress in Barcelona two smartphones from Portégé series. The phones presented in Barcelona are Portégé G500 and Portégé G900 which provide a unique and enhanced level of security - the fingerprint authentication. Both devices are running Windows Mobile software, because Toshiba is trying to offer the same office environment like the PC.

Portégé G500

The Portégé G500 smartphone will be available this spring. It is a high quality compact “slider”. The phone has a 2.3” QVGA screen, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, music player and 2 megapixel VGA camera. Toshiba G500 has 64MB of internal memory and support for miniSD card.

Portégé G900

The Portégé G900 has many similarities with G500, but it has a few advantages. For example the display is bigger - 3″. It features a full QWERTY keyboard which is better in office applications. The Portégé G900 runs Windows Mobile 6 for Pocket PC Phone. This device will be available in the summer of 2007.

We don’t know the prices for the two UMTS mobiles. Further information about the phones will be published soon by Toshiba.

No porn on mobiles

Posted Thursday, February 22nd, 2007 by Mihnea Boiangiu

No pornHere is the story. Telus operator introduced a pay-per-download porn distributing service on January 8th this year. Its customers were able to download adult content on their mobile phones, for $3 an image or $4 a video. After launching the service, Telus has registered and age-verified thousands of customers. Telus entered this service because where is porn involved, there will be a lot of money.

The problems appeared quickly, because Telus has received many complaints and a number of service cancellations. Due to these issues, Telus decided it would be best to stop providing the service. The fight against the pornography on cellphones was started by Vancouver’s Catholic archdiocese that told about 130 parishes and schools to give up their Telus Mobility contracts. They suggested that Telus service users should seek other free-pornography mobile operator. Moreover, the church published a 12-page special section in the B.C. Catholic, a weekly newspaper of Vancouver archdiocese.

Trying to avoid more negative publicity, Telus is now no longer offering porn services. However, today many mobile service providers are offering mobile internet to their customers. So, anyone is able to access adult content on internet. In my opinion, the Vancouver’s Catholic archdiocese didn’t solve at all the problem. What they did is just some free publicity for Telus.

The X6 Mouse Series With Glaser

Posted Thursday, February 22nd, 2007 by Marius Trusculescu

Glaser is the name under which A4Tech chose to present a new technology that is supposed to make optical mouses competitive on glass surfaces. The product will not only work on normal surfaces but on shinny and even transparent ones too due to the dual focus technology for which A4Tech has a pending patent.

As this new technology is not available on just a single mouse you have a lot of models from which you can choose a design that you like. And if you are a lazy boy, A4Tech also included in the models available a double click button which generates a double action from a single press on this button.
