Mypal A730 Could Be Anybody’s Best Friend

Posted Wednesday, January 31st, 2007 by Marius Trusculescu

I have a great little device for you now, the Mypal A730 Pocket-PC launched by Asus. Going by today’s trend, Asus managed to include a lot of functions inside this small stylish apparatus.

Asus A730 pocket pcBut it’s not the design I intend to present as the specs of the A730 are by far more appealing and I’ll try to convince of this by enumerating just a few of them. Let’s start with the 1.3 MP camera meant for taking beautiful pictures and for recording small videos that you can later admire on the 3.7″ (640×480) LCD color display.

For wireless connectivity we have only Bluetooth support so the device is lacking a WiFi card which could be a major disadvantage. Realizing this Asus included WiFi 802.11 b in the A730W version but the a and g standards are still unsupported. An Intel XScale PXA270 520 MHz provides the computing power of this device. For expanding the 64 MB of built-in memory Asus added memory card slots for CF and SD cards.

Asus A730W pocket pcThe operating system for the A730 is the Microsoft Windows Pocket PC 2003 that comes with a lot of extra applications like the software for editing Word, Excel documents or the Windows Media Player for music and video playback. As for the picture taking and video capturing there some Asus programs that can even allow editing on the pocket PC.

Overall, this device is a pretty nice device that tries and succeeds to deliver both a multimedia experience and true PC funtions, but it has a major disadvantage in the reduced support for WiFi connectivity.

More Storage For Mobile Devices Using DAVE

Posted Wednesday, January 31st, 2007 by Marius Trusculescu

In a press release today, Seagate announced the Digital Audio Video Experience (DAVE) technology for mobile storage devices. Practically, the US company is trying to deliver a portable hard drive that will connect wirelessly to your mobile devices to provide remote storage (of 10-20 GB) for your pictures, music, videos or data.

D.A.V.E.When I say remote I am not talking about miles distances, but about a few feet. For example by keeping a DAVE portable hard disk in your pocket you will benefit from all its storage capacity on your mobile phone. The devices will transfer data among them trough a Bluetooth connection but the for the consumers it will be as if the hard drive was part of the phone itself.

The anticipation is great for such a product as mobile phone producers always had troubles integrating large magnetic storage hard drives in their products and the flash memory is much more expensive. This way they don’t need to include the hard drive in the handset, but as a small auxiliary unit.

The HTC P4350: A Great PDA Phone

Posted Wednesday, January 31st, 2007 by Marius Trusculescu

I really like phones that can do almost anything that computers can do and I know you do too. As processing power is still following Moore’s law nowadays telephones have the same or more computing power than PC’s from 10 years ago or less. That is quite a performance, but unfortunately the major downsize of today’s mobile HTC 4350 @ www.devicepedia.comdevices is the small display and the small data input interface (keyboard, joystick, stylus or other). I really hope new technology will provide the solutions, but for now I come to admire the little tricks designers use in order to increase the display and the functionality of their products.

This is the case for the new HTC P4350 Quad band PDA phone. Even if at a first look it seems to be an ordinary PDA which has the touchscreen as the main input interface, you can see there is more to it. As people want to do more on their mobile devices the need for faster input lead to the integration of small QWERTY keyboards into mobile devices. For the vast majority of mobile devices, integrating a keyboard means decreasing the size of the display. However this didn’t happen for the P4350 as the designers incorporated a slide-out keyboard that elegantly appears from behind the 2.8″ color LCD with almost no impact on the design of this phone. Until true precise touchscreens will be available this is by far the most elegant and simple solution I have encountered for a PDA phone.

Leaving aside the design let’s focus on the hardware specifications of this device, as they often are the most important factor when searching for any product. I stated in the previous paragraph that the P4350 is quad band; that means that the phone is practically usable anywhere in the world being a perfect solution for those who travel a lot as it also supports GPRS/EDGE data transfer. But wait, the connectivity doesn’t stop here and WiFi 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 and USB (miniUSB port) are also included.

Regarding the multimedia capabilities of this device I would like to mention the 2 MP digital camera for taking pictures or recording videos, and the playback part (audio, video, pictures) covered by specific applications of the Windows Mobile V5.0 operating system.

The processor behind this phone is a 200 MHz one from Texas Instrument and it is accompanied by 128 MB of ROM and 64 MB DDR SDRAM. With an expansion slot you can add more storage space using the supported microSD memory cards than can provide up to 2 GB of storage for your music, videos or your personal documents.

60PY2DR – More Than A 60″ Plasma TV

Posted Tuesday, January 30th, 2007 by Marius Trusculescu

Everybody loves big TV’s so LG is trying to use that in order to increase their profits. However we don’t mind that as long as we receive good quality products for our money and a good example for that kind of products is the 60PY2DR (don’t get me started on the bad choice of name picking).

LG 60The device of our interest is a 60″ Plasma HDTV (High Definition TV) with an integrated DVR (Digital Video Recorder). Basically, with this device you can watch TV and record your favorite shows, football games and everything else you like on the 160 GB hard drive for watching it later.

Trying to deliver the best LG’s product brings an astonishing resolution of 1366×768, a 1000 cd/m² brightness and a 5000:1 contrast ratio. If you think older videos won’t look good on this huge screen at this resolution you should know the XD Engine will improve the old videos ensuring the best picture quality for your old media.

For finding all this features and many others of the 60PY2DR the follow this link.

Another iPhone Lookalike?

Posted Tuesday, January 30th, 2007 by Marius Trusculescu

Nowadays Apple’s product is still the center of attention even if two weeks have passed since its unveiling at the MacWorld event. First everybody was thinking the product will be a hit when watching Steve Jobs presenting it on stage. But, let’s face it Apple’s mastermind could make everything look great so the skeptics started saying that the iPhone wasn’t as good as it was first thought. Then came the iPhone brand issue, problem that people were willing to overlook at first but it was followed by other important issues like the size of the screen, the inability to install 3rd party applications and the overpricing of the device when compared with the manufacturing price.

After some time, new rumors started saying Apple’s was not the first company to think of a touchscreen phone, by first finding similarities with the Onyx Concept and then continued with the LG Prada , another long awaited product. After unveiling there phone, LG representatives thought of suing Apple over the many similarities between the design of the two new mobile phones and now a new rumor rise today of a copycat of the iPhone (or the Prada phone- I’ll let the lawyers decide), the M8 by Meizu (the device in the picture).

Meizu M8For now the features I will present are not confirmed, but knowing this kind of rumors have became true in the past we might have an improved iPhone brought by Meizu even before June. According to the rumor the M8 design and UI are copying the iPhone but the hardware is slightly different (read it better) having a 3 MP digital camera, 3G, WiFi and Bluetooth wireless connectivity and a TV out port. If we consider the iPhone has no 3G and its camera is only 2 MP we can say the M8 is the better product. Yet we can’t estimate the result of a court battle as the winner might be decided in there if Apple will manage to block the Meizu product from reaching the customers.

Actually at first I intended to write only about the M8 rumored phone, but thinking of the iPhone I realized a lot has happened regarding this little device since it’s announcement earlier this very month and the media coverage focused on a single product seems unprecedented. Even if at first the majority of articles had a positive tone, in time authors’ attitude started shifting to the negative aspects of the device, as further details started to appear.

I know many people think there is no bad publicity, but seriously, look at the PS3 and how press turned a decent piece of hardware into a failure due to bad publicity. Apple will seriously have to bring something new to the iPhone by the time it will be available for customers as there is some dissatisfaction regarding the much anticipated device and the brand might not be enough for a sure success.

Gucci for Blackberry and for iPod

Posted Tuesday, January 30th, 2007 by Mihnea Boiangiu

The fashion designers like the new technology and the gadgets. After we saw LG Prada, now is Gucci‘s turn to get the market attention. Gucci launched a line of products for iPods and Blackberry phones. Gucci’s products are leather cases for the gadgets I told you about. We have some photos of these cases:

Blackberry Case iPod case

Gucci offers the leather cases in two variants. One is gold guccisima leather like in the pictures above, and the other uses chocolate guccisima leather. All I could say, both types of cases are looking very nice, and very stylish. The prices range between $150-290, but if you want something exclusiv you should pay.
